  • I think I ate 1 to many Rice Balls

We have a tradition of making the worst for you but best tasting junk fried food on New Years eve. We Make Fried home made Ham and Cheese Calzones then The deep fried Rice balls my SIL makes are better than any you have ever had there even better than my Uncle Joe's Sicilian Rice balls that he used to make when I was a kid. In fact I told him that this year and he was ready to get the gun out to shoot me for saying that. Then she makes Fried Pizza yes you heard right it is my MIL recipe but in short you take small amounts of pizza dough put sauce in the middle along with Fresh Mozzarella and grated cheese some times even onions on it and drop it in the deep fryer. The dough floats so the Mozz stays on top. Then at the end of the night we make either Zeppoles or since I go to New Orleans yearly and I buy Beigneit mix we make like we did last night Beigneits. We used to do the same meal for Super bowl Sunday but we had to cut it out since it is a month apart. Any way I was looking forward so much for those rice balls that none of us could stop eating them I must have had 3 or 4 and did I pay for it last night, The oil I guess I am no longer used to and I had such Agitio or heart burn that I was up to 6 AM and woke up at 1pm just in time for our company to come so we can eat some more. Thank God the holidays are over but I do plan on waking up early tomorrow to make French Toast with sausage for my little god child that is sleeping over but thats it Stating Monday this house is on a diet!

BTW we need to get a spell checker that understands Italian foods.

That reminds me of the old Alka Seltzer commercial - "I can't believe I ate the WHOLE thing". I keep hoping one of my kids will marry an Italian so that I can indulge in that kind of eating on holidays!

Frank, you crack me up and you make me hungry too. It sounds yummy but you pay for it later. The same for too much wine and Champagne on New Year's eve.

Would you believe you hit the nail on the head, I had Alka Seltzer last night and today. I used to get a better one from Italy that started with an E just can not remember how to spell it but IMO Bosci was just as good if not the best.

Brioschi, the white worm looking Italian version of Alka-Seltzer. I remember the old days.

I love rice balls too! Lol. They are heavy tho, and very fattening, too.

                  Hope you're feeling better.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

I never heard of those foods. Too bad we have no Italians in our family. Glad you're feeling better. Frank.

                      Uh, oh. Dating yourself.

"So, I asked him, 'what is it?' He said, 'try it, you'll like it,' so I tried it. . . . Thought I was gonna die."

Frank, you are too funny. Growing up, all my friends were Italian and I loved eating at their houses because the food was so good. My mother was a good cook but definitely not Italian.

Your post makes me soooo hungry. Where can you get good Italian rice balls and zeppoles in California? (There must be a place in North Beach, San Francisco??)

I tell you where to go, drive South to El Cajon in SD and go to my Uncles Restaurant De Leones, He was a head Chef in Mama Leones in NYC some 30-40 years ago.

BTW you can get a great Calzone at most feasts. I prefer the ones at a feast over the ones from a Pizzaera cause they are deep fried as are the Zeppoles.
