  • Name that Puppy!

OK Frank back to some fun! We are picking up a new addition to our family the first week in May and are going crazy coming up with a name. He will be a large, male English Cream Golden Retriever from just south of Boston. (Sorry Beags but "Boston", "Fenway" and "Schilling" are not options)

Here is the link to the breeders website: Mygoldenretreat.com

We will pick out the individual puppy sometime next week, but as you can see from the pictures, they all look pretty similar. Our top three choices at this point are Cougar, Scout and Koda. We've been scouring all the internet dog naming sites and are looking for something really unique and creative. I know that we have a lot of animal lovers here and you are definitely a smart and creative bunch so I figured I'd give you all a chance.

I tend to like names having to do with nature, the wild west, or masculine characters (Maverick was our golden of twelve years). However, at 10, 8 and 6 the kids might have different ideas.

    So...let's play...Name that Puppy!

That's too funny! That's what my students said. Hopefully my kids are unaware of the word as it applies today.

Cougar was actually the naval aviator from Top Gun who left the academy to spend time with his family. His departure opened up the slot for Maverick.

The oldest might be 10 now but the darn dog will live for 10 years so in about 3 years - kidlet #1 is going to know BIG time what "Cougar" is....try to avoid that one.

Koda is kinda like Cody GrayFal, no????

As a kid I had 2 fish name Baby and George and a brother named Peter - who needs a dog!

Congratulations on the new addition to the family! Now let's get down to business.

Koda--don't like it. Sounds like "the end."

I do like Scout. Also it's easier to say than Cougar and Koda. How about Buddy? We have a neighbor dog named Buddy. He's a big woofy kind of dog.

Scout makes me think of To Kill a Mockingbird, which makes me think of:

                  Atticus
                  Jem
                  Radley

If I had a dog, I would pick a book I love and name for one of its characters. Dickens had some great names!

Sometimes I think puppies/dogs name themselves. We had a male b/t dachshund named Ace. He was seriously ill and we only had him here on earth for about 3 1/2 years. Soon after we found another b/t dachshund, so in his honor we thought we would name him Deuce. Well he was so timid at first that every time a male with a deep voice said "Deuce!" it would scare the bejeebers out of him-LOL! So, as I type, ELWAY is running around the house with his prized "monkey"

If I'm voting, so far I like Scout, Tucker (though...with kids..... Radley, Remmie, and Jackson.

Edited to add the obvious: Duke.

                          A new puppy - that's great!!

Personally, I don't understand the negative connotations associated with Cougar

                          Scout is a great name.

                          I also like:

Kona (kind of like Koda, but Hawaiian ), Bailey, and Buddy.
