  • America's Best Breakfast

We ate at the White Gull Inn this morning, which was just awarded America's best breakfast on Good Morning America. The Door County stuff french toast was fantastic. This is the dish that won the award. Surprisingly, it cost about $7. My husband had becan pancakes, my sister and bil had the late riser platter, two (jumbo) eggs, toast, coffee and sausage for 5.99. A really nice setting too, but we did have a bit of a wait. Things will really get worse when the Door County season starts in a couple of weeks.

I love a good breakfast. Personally I'm a little partial to the Tonga Toast at the Kona Cafe at Disney's Polynesian Resort:

              Ingredients:

2 or 4 slices sourdough bread, cut 1 to 1 1/2 inches thick
              1 banana
              1/3 cup sugar
              1 teaspoon cinnamon
              1 egg
              1/4 cup milk
              1/2 teaspoon vanilla
              oil or shortening for frying
              whipped butter and/or syrup

              Method:

Cut a 1-inch pocket in one side of each bread slice. Cut banana in half crosswise, then split each piece lengthwise. Remove peel and stuff two pieces of fruit in each pocket of bread; set aside. Mix sugar and cinnamon; set aside. Mix together well the egg, milk and vanilla.

Heat about 4 inches of oil in a pan to 350º F. Dip stuffed bread into egg/milk mixture and let it soak a few seconds to let penetrate bread. Fry bread on both sides in hot oil until lightly browned, about 3 minutes. Drain on paper towels or wire rack. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and serve.

*** Beaglemom, I just realized that I've eaten at Zaftig's a few times but not for breakfast. My BIL lives in Brookline and we've eaten dinner there. We tried to go for a Sunday breakfast once but the line was out the door. If I had known how good the breakfast was I would have waited. I'm definitely going next time.

The lines moves fast, but the trick is to get there early. I love their French toast. They put the banana slices in the middle.

My favorite French toast is served at the Kilauea Lodge. Made with three different kinds of Hawaiian sweet bread and served with coconut syrup.

Oh Luanne that bread is to die for. I'm actually glad I can't get it locally , otherwise...serious poundage fo me.

All these breakfast options sound lovely, too bad I am not near any of them at the moment.
