We were tempted to use Fox recently because we are picking up a car in CA in one city and dropping off in another. The only other company who has a price in the ballpark was Thrifty (there is a thread on TUG complaining about them). Every other car rental was double the price! We have decided to book with Thrifty. Sounds like the lesser of 2 evils.

Thrifty's latest little gimmick is requesting you fill up within 5 miles of dropoff and providing the gas receipt which I find profoundly annoying.

Thrifty did respond to my complaint. It took three e-mails and a phone call but I noticed today that the added charge plus $10 was credited on our CC. No posting on Facebook but I did post the information here and OY. I made no reference to the postings when I contacted Thrifty.

I'm happy they refunded the money but disappointed that the SLC franchise attempted to slip one by me. They almost did if I hadn't checked our CC statement and noticed that the charge was higher than what I was expecting to pay. Good thing I keep our contracts for a few months after the rental. Otherwise I wouldn't have had anything to review to notice there was a charge for "tripsaver" that wasn't suppose to be there.

Just read you contract before signing. Thrifty uses franchises and all franchises aren't created equal. Some will try to beat you out of a couple of dollars.

My latest, and probably last, reservation with Thrifty had fine print that said if you canceled the reservation within 24 hours, they would charge you one days rental as a cancelation fee. I've checked the reservations I have with other companies and don't see this restriction.

I'm starting to understand that reading the fine print of a rental contract is becoming more important. I use to scan for milage or geographical restrictions. Now it looks as if I need to check for backdoor charges and any other restrictions that could generate extra fee's for the agencies.

              Read Everything

We used Enterprise a few months ago for a two week rental and were scheduled to return the car at 3pm. When we arrived a sign on the door said that on Saturdays they close at noon (this was on a Saturday). When we rented it nobody said anything about when they closed and we didn't ask.
Luckily I have a smart phone so we could find a Taxi company phone # since none were posted. The rental place itself was in a not to good an area and here we were with two pieces of luggage and a laptop computer at a closed building.
Things worked out and we learned to find everything out ahead of time.
