  • One big difference between the NBA and the WNBA

Mailbag: What box color did Lauren Jackson use to go red?

Somehow, I just can't imagine a beat writer covering the NBA writing about what product Steve Nash uses to get that tousled look.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

    “You shouldn't wear that body.”

You mean other than one league has athletes who can jump and the other doesn't? The WMBA is boring. High School boy's basketball is more exciting.

All professional basketball is boring, so I rarely watch it. If I had to pick one it would be the WNBA, but my personal preference is for college basketball and more precisely womens' college basketball.

I love how the NBA Finals featured advertisements for the WNBA along the lines of "basketball is basketball." That's like your waiter at a gourmet restaurant plugging McDonald's by saying "beef is beef."

Tonyg , I agree the college game is so much better and exciting than the NBA games.

I will take the NBA any day especially if the Lakers are playing. I don't care much for college basketball and I detest women's basketball.

I do enjoy women's volleyball and softball but definitely not women's basketball.

NBA is five selfish individuals playing backyard ball. College is a team playing the game of basketball.

I'll take college any day over the NBA.

If you believe that, then you are absolutely clueless about the game of basketball.

The NCAA Men's tournament is very exciting because it's one and done. To win the NBA championship, you really need to be the best team. It's hard to win 4 games by luck alone. In college, you need a lotta luck to win it all.

Of course, the women's game is just the opposite. The favorites almost always win because there is so much disparity in the talent levels.

If Connecticut dropped women's basketball, you would start agreeing that women's basketball is boring. They can't dunk. They care barely shoot 20 foot jumpers. Most shots are 10 feet and in. Some of the women can handle the ball decently. But, the plays they run are actually pretty trivial when compared to the professional ranks.

Haha I remember when the WNBA had its first "dunk" and they stopped play to celebrate.

All professional b-ball is boring, and I find the WNBA unwatchable. I will watch the NBA playoffs, because the teams actually play like they care then, but the NBA regular season is a joke. I also think that a regular season men's college game between two good teams is far more entertaining than a regular season pro game between two good teams.

As with anything, if you have a vested interest in something, it can be very exciting. I've been a Laker fan since the early 70's. We lost way too many championships to the Celtics before we finally beat them in 1985. So, even though that game 7 of the NBA finals was perhaps the poorest offensive performance I've seen by two top teams, it was also one of the most entertaining watching grown men fighting so hard to win a game. The fact that it was a game 7 against the most hated rival ever, made it that much more exciting and tense. I didn't want to lose that game. Thank God, we didn't.

I get NBA league pass every year so that I can get all the Laker games. I usually watch 60-70 regular season games per year. It is a long season that can get very tedious. But, it is interesting to watch team chemistry develop over time. But, it's not worth it if you don't really love the team.

While I agree to some extent, due to the length of the NBA regular season, there are definitely some games/phases where players/teams "mail it in". I used to be a hard core Lakers fan (from Gail Goodrich & Happy Hairston, thru Keith Wilkes & Norm Nixon and then later, "Showtime" and onward), and they're still easily my favorite NBA team, but the sport in itself bores me because of the overall lack of effort that's now often apparent. Do I believe Kobe busts his ass every game? Sure. Lamar Odom? Andrew Bynum? Not so much.

One seldom sees lack of effort in the college game. Why? IMO, it's because most complete college hoops careers (assuming one starts getting significant PT as a sophomore) are about the lenght of 1 NBA regular season. Every game matters to those kids, and if they don't win 2 out of every 3 games they're not going dancing.

Bottom line, I am a sports junkie. But I only have so much time to commit to watching sports, so I have to choose which events interest me enough to watch. When it comes to pro basketball, that means only the NBA playoffs, and, even then, the earlier rounds only if the Lakers are in.

I used to be a sports junkie. I watched NCAA men's religiously. I would have great discussions with other hoops fan about specific plays in specific games that happened years in the past amazing non-sports fans that anyone would remember such minute detail. And, I, too, got too time constrained. My favorite post season tournament remains March Madness.

I was an avid Dodger, Lakers, Angels, Rams, Trojan (football) and UCLA (basketball, I hate to admit it but my cousin went there when I was a kid) and tennis fan. If I wasn't eating, sleeping, working or going to class, I was watching or playing sports.

I guess I don't watch college basketball anymore because I don't have a team to root for. I don't like simply watching sports without something at stake. In the case of sports, it's emotional tie in.

For NBA basketball, I'd have to agree that the athletes don't give it 100% for the whole season. I don't think it's possible, actually. If you do, you will burn yourself out before the playoffs.

That said, I truly appreciate the pro game of basketball and how it's played. The plays they execute and the extraordinary athleticism displayed really amazes me to this day.

The college game has more energy, but zone defense makes it actually quite boring. Now, if more teams played Princeton type ball, I'd probably change my mind.
