The news said that the bed bugs are traveling now. Not just in beds. Victoria Secrets store even had some. There is a web site which shows what places have been infected. Many shops are trying hard to get ahead of the problem. They said the bugs are traveling in purses, bags etc....

I'm trying to decide whether to go to NYC in Oct for a few days - would need to purchase concert tix in a few days - and already have a TS confirmation for 2011...

From a review of Manhatan Club on hotels.com:
Manhattan Club Suites Hotel - New York - New York - With 43 guest reviews

Not recommended Trip type: With Friends "Disappointing" Reviewed by a Hotels.com guest on Oct 15, 2009

I was very disappointed in the Manhattan Club from the minute I walked in needing a rest room immediately....The single one in the lobby was occupied and I said to the staff member that it was an emergency. She just walked away. We had to wait a LONG time for a bellman to help with the luggage. Our room was not ready, which was OK since we were early. When we came back to the hotel, they did upgrade our room. However, we waited a very long time for the luggage to be brought up. While waiting we noticed a small bug, reported by the bellman to be a bed bug, crawl across our bed. The bellman took it downstairs to check it out. I insisted on changing our room and we were put into a smaller room. When the sofa was opened, I had to climb over it to get out of my bed. I spoke to the reception desk a few times and they offered me breakfast vouchers. We had other plans and could not use them. They did not offer any other compensation, not even a drink that we had in the lounge. In short, it was a very disappointing stay. The one great feature is the location in Manhattan.

You would be surprised to know the places that have bed bugs. It is becoming a real crisis. They had been basically eradicated but are now making a strong comeback. The pesticides used to kill them in the past are now banned.
Here is a link that will show hotels that are KNOWN to have a problem... for every one that is reported, I'm sure there are many more that are not. Even several of the Disney properties have a problem

Great. My DH leaves Sunday for a week long conference in NYC. He hopes to be able to catch at least one play.

I am grossed out even thinking of these critters.

How do I check his stuff when he gets back to make sure he's not bringing any home??!!

                  From the website linked above:

"Because our bedbug reports come directly from users, we can't guarantee their accuracy"

Maybe NYC hotel prices will finally come down.

The Manhattan Club has been in need of new furnishings for years. Still, the location and size of the units can't be beat.

It's not just limited to hotels, apartments are dealing with them as well. I would imagine any reputable hotel encountering a problem will treat it as aggressively as possible. But what do I know?

Bed bugs are so many places now. Here's some info from Orkin (not promoting their services, just some good info):
                    Bed Bug Tips for Travelers
Most everyone knows the saying, “Good night, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite.” When traveling, here are tips from Orkin to help you sleep tighter.

                    Survey
any and every hotel room for signs of a bed bugs infestation. Bed bugs are not a sanitation issue, which means they can be found in any hotel or motel – from a one-star to five-star location. Signs they are present? Large infestations of bed bugs can create a musty, sweet odor, like soda pop syrup. They leave behind brown or red spots on sheets. While not known to spread disease like many other pests, bed bugs can leave itchy, bloody welts on the skin. (Welts more commonly appear when the victim is sensitive to insect bites.)

                    Lift and look

                    Bedbug Inspection
Bed bugs tend to settle in close proximity to their food source – you! During the day these nocturnal insects disappear in crevices associated with mattresses, box springs, sheets, furniture, upholstery and hollow bedposts, as well as crevices behind baseboards, pictures and even torn wallpaper. Make sure to lift and look around all possible hiding spots for bed bugs in the hotel room, not just the mattress.

                    Elevate
your luggage and other items. Carefully inspect the hotel’s luggage rack. If there are no signs of bed bugs on it, use it to keep your suitcase off the floor and away from the bed. Also pull the luggage rack away from the wall. This will reduce the likelihood of the insect crawling up the wall and getting into your things.

                    Examine
your luggage while repacking and once you return home, to ensure you haven't picked up unwelcome visitors. Bed bugs are great hitchhikers, so be sure to check your luggage and clothing for bed bugs before bringing luggage back into the bedroom. (Orkin recommends unpacking in your garage or utility room.)

                    Professional help
is out there – use it! Because bed bugs can survive extreme temperatures (up to 113 degrees Fahrenheit) and are extremely difficult to kill, treating for an infestation requires the use of a licensed, professional pest control operator with specific experience treating for these pests.

The mind is a terrible thing. I have been itchy since reading this thread

We need a new mattress and were going to try a few nights at Marriott and Westin to "try before we buy" but now I'm not sure it's worth it!!

I've slept on both before but not with an eye (or back, more like) toward owning

When I changed the sheets today, I found myself inspecting underneath very closely. I may never sleep again
