eeew. itching (psychologic). Last month, we were in a state park in TN, Patrick Henry Square in Colonial Williamsburg, and a hotel on our way home, and somewhere, we all got itchy! They better not get into my Tempurpedic! So far, so good!

Next week, Sunday Morning TV show on CBS is doing a story on bed bugs, they did a promo on it this morning.

I still can't decide whether to plan a quick trip to NYC for late Oct. I'd need to buy my concert tix tomorrow morning.

I thought about packing for this short trip w/clothes and luggage and stuff that we wouldn't mind discarding after the trip - if that's even possible... NO WAY do I want to bring these little suckers (literally) home, and risk having to get rid of the only really comfortable bed + memory foam topper in the universe.

I would still go but do what is recommended in longtimer's post to be sure.

We recently went to Washington DC and NYC and I had just seen this YouTube movie so got paranoid. I checked everything out that was recommended in this movie too like checking the drawers where you put your clothes in, etc. The hotel was fine and we survived the trip.

I didn't realize that even your luggage could be contaminated from the plane ride on your way home so now I have to think about that too. Not only do we have to worry about terrorists but now about bed bugs too.

How much longer will traveling be fun and not becoming a hassle? I read the other day that even restaurant seats could hide these bed bugs or theater seats too. How awful to even having to think about that. I also read that bed bugs were spotted in a Victoria Principal shop.

They are selling a product now where you can heat up every item that cannot be washed or dry-cleaned so that may be handy if you travel a lot but a suitcase wouldn't fit. I can't remember where I found the link but a solution is out there.

            Bed Bug Tips for Travelers
Most everyone knows the saying, “Good night, sleep tight, don't let the bed bugs bite.” When traveling, here are tips from Orkin to help you sleep tighter.

            Survey
any and every hotel room for signs of a bed bugs infestation. Bed bugs are not a sanitation issue, which means they can be found in any hotel or motel – from a one-star to five-star location. Signs they are present? Large infestations of bed bugs can create a musty, sweet odor, like soda pop syrup. They leave behind brown or red spots on sheets. While not known to spread disease like many other pests, bed bugs can leave itchy, bloody welts on the skin. (Welts more commonly appear when the victim is sensitive to insect bites.)

            Lift and look

            Bedbug Inspection
Bed bugs tend to settle in close proximity to their food source – you! During the day these nocturnal insects disappear in crevices associated with mattresses, box springs, sheets, furniture, upholstery and hollow bedposts, as well as crevices behind baseboards, pictures and even torn wallpaper. Make sure to lift and look around all possible hiding spots for bed bugs in the hotel room, not just the mattress.

            Elevate
your luggage and other items. Carefully inspect the hotel’s luggage rack. If there are no signs of bed bugs on it, use it to keep your suitcase off the floor and away from the bed. Also pull the luggage rack away from the wall. This will reduce the likelihood of the insect crawling up the wall and getting into your things.

            Examine
your luggage while repacking and once you return home, to ensure you haven't picked up unwelcome visitors. Bed bugs are great hitchhikers, so be sure to check your luggage and clothing for bed bugs before bringing luggage back into the bedroom. (Orkin recommends unpacking in your garage or utility room.)

            Professional help
is out there – use it! Because bed bugs can survive extreme temperatures (up to 113 degrees Fahrenheit) and are extremely difficult to kill, treating for an infestation requires the use of a licensed, professional pest control operator with specific experience treating for these pests.

We just got back from New York City last night. We spent a week at the HGVC West 57th Street timeshare. We did NOT see any evidence of bed bugs anywhere and we went all over the city. We went to 2 shows, several restaurants and many other places.

Well, I pulled the trigger and bought tix to my NYC event a few minutes ago - they went on sale this morning and there were only 4 left by 2 pm when I finally got my call through - so I couldn't overthink it anymore.

Glad to hear West 57th was clear - we have an xchange there next year.

I've never been nervous about terrorists. We live in a tick-infested state, and I've been bitten hundreds of times by both kinds, the deer ticks (Lyme-size) and regular ones (Rocky Mt spotted fever kind, which my best friend contracted a few years ago and could have died if she hadn't been so on top of the symptoms and demanded the treatment before her bloodwork came back).

But I have to say, this gave me more pause. EEEwwww!

Last Friday, Time Warner announced that the company was dealing with an outbreak of bed bugs in its Manhattan offices, which houses CNN news network. And today it was announced the Times Square AMC Empire 25 movie theater has temporarily closed its doors to bring in exterminators, following moviegoers complaints of being bitten by the tiny creatures. Apparently, the Magic Johnson Harlem 9 theater uptown was also treated for a bedbug problem. Too bad the recent Viacom Building bleach spill wasn’t closer to any of the venues: one disaster might have mitigated the other.
UPDATE: Bedbugs have now invaded the offices of Elle magazine, at 50th Street and Broadway in Manhattan. No one in media is safe!

                          Bed Bug Email Information

Hi All: A bit of information that you might like to know about. We have
friends here in our community and one of their sons is an entomologist (insect
expert), and has been telling them that there is an epidemic of bed bugs now
occurring in America. Recently I have heard on the news that several stores in
NYC have had to close due to bed bug problems, as well as a complete mall in New
                          Jersey.
                          >
                          > He says that since much of our clothing, sheets, towels, etc. now comes from
companies outside of America, (sad but true), even the most expensive stores
sell foreign clothing from China, Indonesia, etc. The bed bugs are coming in on
the clothing as these countries do not consider them a problem. He recommends
that if you buy any new clothing, even underwear and socks, sheets, towels, etc.
that you bring them into the house and put them in your clothes dryer for at
least 20 minutes. The heat will kill them and their eggs. DO NOT PURCHASE
CLOTHES AND HANG THEM IN THE CLOSET FIRST. It does not matter what the price
range is of the clothing, or if the outfit comes from the most expensive store
known in the U.S. They still get shipments from these countries and the bugs
can come in a box of scarves or anything else for that matter. That is the
reason why so many stores, many of them clothing stores have had to shut down in
                          NYC and other
places. All you need is to bring one item into the house that has bugs or
eggs and you will go to hell and back trying to get rid of them. He travels all
over the country as an adviser to many of these stores, as prevention and after
                          they have the problem.
                          >
                          > Send this information on to those on your e-mail list so that this good
                          prevention information gets around quickly.
                          >=
