No one has commented on that. Doesn't that seem strange . . . that a 55-year-old would not have any other FB friends?

&, when it comes to things on the Internet, doesn't friends seem like a misnomer . . . that merely by being accepted by someone to be allowed to follow the blogging of their everyday life is considered being a friend.

In real life there's much more involved in being a friend.

Blogs on: If You Hate Your Boss On Facebook, One Federal Agency May Have Your Back

HLN is reporting on it today. Lots of opinions on both sides.

I don't thinki that it is any more inappropriate than a subset of employees that are friends going out for a drink after work and not necessarily inviting everyone in the office to go. This happens all the time in many workplaces. People see other employees socially in non office environments and sometimes it does include boses. This has been going on for years and I don't see it stopping. Just because a new way of socializing has come about I don't think that drastically changes dynamics that always go on anyway.

Yeah, that's pretty much one side of the argument.

Of course, the boss fraternizing with underlings has also traditionally been taboo in most places.

Another thing that is not new is employees acting one way when the boss is around and another (screwing around) when the boss is gone, and giving each other the heads up when the boss is around. Cell phones and texting expedites that.

Where I work, those that are on facebook together are also texting and looking at texts many times a day. Today's bosses need to understand that all that texting could be undermining their authority.

The mature (in age) person who prompted this thread is one who acts one way when the boss is there and another when he is not, and chides anyone for talking to anyone who is honest with the boss about what's going on.

Some companies do not allow some employees to have cell phones and similar devices while they are on the clock, and I know of employees who have been left off the schedule (the local way of letting one go) for too much cell phone use.
