  • Fruit Fly Season?

It always seems that this time of the year here in the northeast the wine gets opened , the fruit comes out, and the the fruit flys also show up everywhere.
is this common? if it is is there a way to get rid of these things? after awhile they do become rather annoying.
any old tricks or tips to get ride of these pests would be great.

Traps work- wasp traps baited with fruit. If I recall the lifespan correctly, they will be gone in a week or less if a new generation is avoided. No fruit or fruit products and they will fade away.

I read about this and it has worked for me.
Put some fruit in the bottom of a water or soda bottle.
Take a piece of paper and roll it into a cone, with a small opening in the bottom and a big opening at the top. Insert the cone pointed size down into the bottle, and tape it onto the bottle so it won't fall off.
The fruit flies are drawn to the bottle. For some reason, they can get into the bottle, but they cannot get out. It takes a couple of days to get them all, but it works.
      Good luck.

        Tony,
You must have taken the same college course my oldest son did. I remember him doing the life cycle of the fruit fly. (or maybe it eas high school)

            Fruit fly season?

            What's the limit? Daily? Possession?

Similar to above . . . In the kitchen, DW has a small jar with apple cider vinegar in the bottom and a small funnel in the neck.

They check in and don't check out.

All I can think about is the fruit fly genetics lab in biology. You were supposed to anesthetise the flies and check different colorations. I guess a few teams didn't use enough ether. The lab was closed off for at least a week while they got the fumigators in.

Hoping your season is a short one and doesn't call for such drastic measures.

We raised them when I took genetics, but they were wisely the wingless variety.
