  • Yard sale vultures

Cleaning out and paring down here at Casa Lawren. I decided to place an ad in the local paper and do a one day event. Carefully stating it was a one day sale, that the day of the week Sunday was clearly stated in the ad and the hours are 10AM - 3PM.

My door bell rings at 8:57AM this morning and there is a man at my front entry. Are you having a yard sale? Yes (says I in my flannel jammies) tomorrow. Is this 123 XYZ Street? Last time I looked and the sale is TOMORROW. OH sorry to bother you. he says while craning his neck to look into my house, (Like I'm going to let him in) No problem (I growl) I'll see you tomorrow at TEN.

    That was one of many.

I can't wait to see what time the party will start in the morning.
    Lawren

We had a huge tag sale today at our church and I swear people are insane. The sale was to start at 11 AM and there were people there at 9 AM trying to get in. It's like they thing the Hope Diamond is for sale and if they aren't first in line they will miss it.

Hope your sale goes well tomorrow and you get fair prices for everything you are trying to downsize.

And the lies they will tell to try to get that first look or first shot at buying. It may be worth it to add to a ad: Absolutely no previews.

I had 2 yard sales. One was in July and the other in Sept. with a staring time of 9:00. At the first one people started showing up at 7:00. I don't even know how they found the place. No street numbers where we live and I did not put any signs up until 8:30. The second time I added NO EARLY BIRDS in caps to the ad and believe it or not, no one showed up before 9:00!

                    Good luck, Lawren.

I regret selling a 1 foot bras horse years ago. We sold it cheap and I knew it was worth $ but I had no use for it and my wife gave it to the guy for $5. We also caught an elderly over weight lady stealing for us and the people across from us, What a pro, She made believe she was sick sat on the steps and asked for water. My wife went in and she took a watch and put it up her skirt. She must have has some kind of pockets sewed in.

Be sure you have people watching because these people do this every day.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

This is why we normally just donate or toss what we want to get rid of. The few dollars just isn't worth it.

Several years ago I stopped having yard/garage sales. Idiot people showing up two hours early to get the first crack as second hand stuff for a quarter drove me insane. It got to a point that if someone asked me if I'd take a nickel for something marked 50 cents, I'd just give it to them. Hey, if 45 cents is going to make or break them, they can just take it for nothing. Then there are the people who actually steal stuff from you.

Now I just load up stuff I don't want into the back of my car and drive it down to the Goodwill store. I get a receipt I can use for a tax deduction and I don't have to waste a day on crazy people either trying to get something for nothing or thinking I have some rare relic that will be worth thousands when they show it at the antiques road show.

I know it is a pain but it was worth it when I watched my wife count up $900. Of couse the value that we paid might have been $9000. It was all stuff that was just taking up space. BTW My MIL made even more
