Sure but donating it gives you the write-off (if you itemize), so you get some of it back, and it is a *lot* easier.

Nobody died.
The guy that rang the bell was here first again today. Told him since he was so very challenged with days of the week and time zones that I wasn't selling him anything unless he helped me drag out some stuff, which he did.
Good weather and lots of traffic from the ad and the well positioned street signs (which I just got back from taking in).
Relatively civilized and it was fun watching my son polish his sales skills. He was very surprised when I handed him 10% of the loot for his help lugging things out, selling, helping people with heavier/bulkier items and putting away. He doesn't get a chance to make $15/hour often.
Successful in a lot of ways. There is one woman I came close to throttling and may still as she has my # and is "negotiating" on a big ticket item. If she doesn't sober up by Tuesday, it can go to good will for a nice write off.
Honestly something I don't tolerate well and every 15 years or so need a reminder.Lawren

Oh yeah. My horoscope for today was:
Hi Lawren! Here is your Daily Horoscope for Sunday, October 24
Take stock of your possessions today, even if it's just all in your mind. It's a great time for you to clear out the extras or just reorganize so you've got more room for what's sure to come in soon.Lawren

I have learned that a lot of the early birds are actually buying to sell at flea markets, or have customers for collectibles. They know exactly what they can sell and for how much.
The last time I had a garage sale (3 years ago) I watched as a woman slowly looked at all of the tables and pocketed something from just about everyone, even putting some things in her purse. She then comes up to me to pay for two 25c items. I politely asked her if she also wanted everything else she had on her... she takes a few things from her pockets and walks away....
I now donate to our church annual sale, and other organizations that I hear of. Too much work to make so little AND get robbed...

Hubby loves garage sales, but he isn't a crack-of-dawner. Usually he goes Saturday mornings after dropping daughter off for ballet. He buys and resells cameras, computers, games, and LEGO, does well enough that last year he bought an old house to keep it all in.
Which was robbed last week. They took a bunch of cameras, couple of computer games, and some laptops (not mine, happily enough). We were hanging out with the guy working on the electrical system there waiting on the cops, and Hubby remarks, "At least they didn't take the LEGO - that's the really expensive stuff." Electrician says, "You guys always give me a new perspective on life."
