Not to shop, but believe it or not, I VOLUNTEER to work Black Friday. I work for a retailer in a corporate capacity. Company policy is to ask corporate employees to volunteer for a shift during the holiday season.

Store personnel is always so happy to have an extra set of hands to direct customers to the correct department/sales person (they work on commission), fold and replenish stock, wrap, etc.

Best Buy is probably the best in our Area. They are very organized, have good quantities of even the doorbusters, and give out vouchers early so you can stop standing in line if you're out of luck on a favorite item. The only bad thing is you have to get in and out quickly. It doesn't take long for the lines to get totally gridlocked. Usually by 10 minutes after opening they have started making people wait to go in because they're beyond the maximum occupancy limits.

My favorite purchase every year, but the way, is the poinsettias at Home Depot and Lowes. They both have them for 99 cents. Last year I stopped at Lowes first, but then Home Depot's were bigger and they had more colors.

I buy a couple of dozen of them and give them away to everybody during the holidays. I also keep a few to decorate with. I've had pretty good luck with keeping them alive from year to year. DH killed my biggest one from three years ago this summer, but I have three in my office now from prior years.

Hubby's sister has done it since I've known her, and hubby has been doing it for a decade or more. Hubby doesn't plan anything (even trips ) until the night before, so that's when he plans Black Friday. He doesn't wait anywhere overnight but usually gets up way early, goes until nine or so (when the crowds pick up), takes a nap and then goes again in the afternoon when the crowds have died down. Four of my kids go with him - eldest daughter joins me in thinking they're all whacked, but they think it's good fun.

His big deals are generally collectible toys - mostly Legos - that he either sells immediately on e-bay at a profit or hangs onto for a bit and then resells.

                  Sheila,

Thank you for the tip about Poinsettias! I usually get mine from a cohort that is fundraising for his daughter's gymnastics team, but he doesn't work there any more. While I was fine paying $12 for a giant plant with fabulous varieties to choose from, I look forward to paying Much Less, and will definitely treat an older neighbor that fell months ago and is rather messed up (but healing) and friends that are quite down on their luck this season.

I just knew I would learn all kinds of good stuff by starting this thread!
