I am having mohs surgery next week for skin cancer on my eyelid. If you have had mohs surgery, can you tell me what to expect? Thanks!

I have never heard of it either but the procedure looks promising from what I read here. I hope for you that the surgery will go well.

I have a friend who has had this procedure done twice. My information will be very basic based on 2nd hand info (hers) and probably not much more than you already know.

The premise for Mohs is that they take layers off at a time...check them...and then continue until they feel the layers or margins are clear.

I'm sure if its on your eyelid that there will be some sort of freezing or local anesthetic to reduce/eliminate the pain.

I've had a few suspicious things removed-but not with Mohs. With a family history of melanoma-I can't be too careful. Lop it off I say.

I know this is probably not what you were looking for....but I hope it helped to know that many have done this and really-it's a great method because they only take what's necessary IMO.

        Good luck to you!

I've had it four times. Mostly it is boring. You will get local anesthetic and they begin carving. Then you wait until they check to see if they got it all. If not, they slice off a little more and you wait till they check again. This repeats until they gt it all. No pain, just boring. Take along something to read. It is really no big deal!

Edit: Since it is on your eyelid you may not be able to read because of the temp bandaging. Take an ipod or something to listen to via earphones.

DH has had it twice on his cheek. His was a pretty large area and it only took one or two slices before they felt they had it all. He didn't feel bad but did have a large bulky bandage (i think that's normal with Moh's surgery). He also had a scar but it has faded. Recovery was quick, I don't think he even filled the RX for the pain med.

Good luck, don't worry. It is a great, safe procedure.

I had my surgery this morning. All went well. They got all the cancer in the first slice. Thanks everyone!
