I like the Capresso coffee maker that has the built in burr coffee grinder. You just put the coffee beans in and set it for the amount of coffee you want and the strength. No measuring.

THAT's the name I couldn't remember, thanks!!! The only reason I was hesitating about an automatic grinder built in is that we like to set the timer to make the coffee in the morning; So I have a few questions:

      1. How noisy is it while it's grinding? and
      2. If we wait til we're up to turn it on, how long does it take from start to finished pot? Does the grinding add any significant time to the process?
      3. Do you have the thermal pot or is it clear? I have heard that the thermal pots don't keep the coffee quite hot enough for some folks, and I like to be able to see how much coffee is left....

Be prepared to NOT get the one that's advertised from Gevalia. We wanted stainless steel and got silver colored plastic. They were out of the one advertised and offered the plastic one instead.

oooh I will not be pleased if that happens... the only one pictured on the site is stainless with a choice of black or white accents...

I picked up a "temporary" braun for $16 at Bed Bath and Beyond the other day, no visit to BJs required, whew!

Avery - I can't answer #1 for that model. I can say that my Capresso burr grinder is noisy.

#2: grining doesn't add significantly to the brewing time. It takes about 30 seconds to grind the beans, maybe less.

#3: I never leave coffee sitting on the hot plate after brewing. I either immediately pour it into a mug, or transfer it to a thermal carafe. The next coffee maker I get will have a thermal carafe.

The taste of coffee is generated by a complex misture of aroma compounds in the coffee. The heavier, low volatility compounds give it body and depth. Those are also tend to be more bitter. The lighter, high volatility compounds give it balance.

When you leave coffee sitting on a hot plate, you drive off water due to evaporation, and you cause those flavors to volatilize as well. But because the lighter compounds are more volatile, those get driven off faster. The result is that heated coffee gets stringer, but also more bitter and almost completely lacking the lighter balancing elements. And if it sits on the hot plate long enough and loses enough water, what's left of the coffee can start scorching.

That process actually occurs during brewing as well - that's why it's good to do whatever you can to minimize the time the coffee spends on a hot plate.
“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

“This is a blouse and skirt. I don't know what you're talking about.”

            “You shouldn't wear that body.”

              Avery,
              1. It is very noisy while grinding but
              2. I don't think it even takes 30 seconds to grind and I don't know how long to say from start to finish. It takes longer than my husband's Bunn which is about 3-5 minutes but not much longer.
              3. I have the clear pot. I like the idea of the thermal but I did have one previously and it did not keep the coffee hot enough for me and it just didn't seem to taste as good. Mine is set to shut off automatically after 1 1/2 hours.

It has the electronics on it to set the pot in advance to make whenever you like. Just push the basket under the grinder, it will turn on and grind, then flip itself into position under the coffee maker to brew.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Well the Gevalia arrived today, that was fast!! And it's the stainless one in the pic, so that's good. We will test it in the am (being very careful not to let the filter fold in lest we end up like Frank did today). My first impression is that it is VERY BIG, the footprint is much larger than our old one. But I think it's because of the "shower" system of soaking the coffee, the housing has to be bigger. So I am looking forward to my morning coffee... between this and the Omaha steaks, this site has been a real boon this week! You guys rock!

                    Update on my Gevalia coffeemaker

We have been using the coffeemaker since we got it. It makes great coffee, and is the 'sprinkler style' so it covers the grinds slowly and evenly.

                    Yesterday the carafe broke

Today I had trouble finding a replacement online, so I called the company. They are sending me a new one FREE, since it is still under warranty

And, no, I am not still an active member, I cancelled after the first shipment.

So this is a gift that keeps on giving...

That is something. I did not think they would send you a carafe after it was used and after you canceled there service. You must have gotten a great rep and lucked out.

I am having a good week rep-wise. I am even happy with RCI this week

but really, I think anyone would've given it to me. He looked up my account and said it was covered under warranty, and that was that. I even told him first that I was no longer an active member

eta: here is DH's response when I emailed him about the warranty:

                        Warranty against...........big fisted lummoxes?

                        hahahahahahahaha
