    Love my Kindle.
I have installed the free Kindle app on my smartphones and pc so that I can resume the book form the same point on any of the devices. I definitely prefer the Kindle to reading on the phone, but I don't always have it with me.

I suspect this was done deliberately by Amazon to increase profits from the sale of books.
Perhaps, but I don't think so. Rather than license a format that other e-readers use (EPUB), they bought the company that made the MOBI format. Some libraries do use MOBI-format books (mine has both MOBI and EPUB), but it is not common.

We bought dd a Kindle for Christmas. She is loving being able to load a lot of the classics (free) that she hasn't read yet.

          Love my e-reader!

A couple of friends gave me a Nook for Christmas. The wife told me to read the pros and cons, and that maybe I'd want to upgrade to the color version. After a week of research, I decided the color would be better for my needs, so I upgraded, and I love it. True, it costs more than a Kindle, and I didn't even consider a Kindle because I wasn't going to buy an e-reader for myself. I my friends had given me a Kindle instead, I probably would be extremely happy with that. Some things I like about e-readers:
Adjustable font size, format (landscape or portrait)
ease of holding or propping up for reading,
My friend wants us to use the Lend feature because we read a lot of the same authors. It allows me to lend her one of my books for 14 days.
Barnes and Noble uses in-store downloads and coupon specials to draw you in to use your e-book in store, where they know you'll also end up leaving with plenty of good old print books as well. I love to get lost in the aisles of books!
Adjustable brightness of screen for different light needs. I like reading in bed, and with this one I don't need a light. I just dim the screen as much as I like.
With the color Nook, I can also take along some children's books to read to the little ones.
I had cut back on reading because holding a book, esp. a good one, hurt my hand and wrist after a short time. An e-reader is easy on the hand, and as others have expressed already, it's a lot easier to take a lot of books on a trip. And it never loses my place in a book when I misplace the bookmark!
I realize it wouldn't be as easy to read, say, on the beach, but I'll probably still bring along a trashy paperback for those occasions!

I don't have any of the readers. I'm an audio book lover. My only comment/concern is one that I read online. It was about the ability to leave a paperback book on your chair if you want to go into the water, but you wouldn't want to leave your e-reader there. It might grow legs and walk off.

Kindalls have an audio feature also.

The leaving them on the chair is an issue.

                Sue,
I,m going on a long awaited vacation next week and was going to take the iPad for reading, but then decided to take the kindle instead. I had the same concerns, so I bought a a portable safe by pac safe. It's not as convenient as leaving a book on the chair, but I know it will be safe and my camera and cash will fit nicely in it also.

If you are at the pool, what would you lock it to? A chair or table leg could be easily lifted. An umbrella stuck in the stand could be yanked out pretty fast too. It's always been an issue - how to decently protect cash, etc. while at the pool and beach. We've been forced to go with the hide and hope method .

Uh, the color Nook shows colors graphics? Of just has a pretty colored cover? In any case it doesn't seem like something I would need. But I can see where colored graphics would come in handy, or even be necessary, for some applications.

$140 or so doesn't seem that bad! Heck I can save that in overweight baggage fees at the airport Actually I sometimes have to lug my books as carryon to stay under weight limits.

Lots of votes for the Kindle. Nook seems good. Any other contenders??

I will probably put it on the chair, which means that they would have to carry the chair around to take it..bit awkward. Unless they were carrying bolt cutters with them, it would be inconvenient enough to make them think. At least that's what I hope would happen

Yes, you are right. I was thinking the leg, but the arm makes more sense.
