Frank my heart and prayers are with you as you make tough decisions for your companion pet. Nothing has been harder for me in the past than to recognize the quality of life issues for my pets in having to make the selfless act to let go.

Frank, I work for years with the Executive Director Sue Marino. She is an awesome nurse who has dedicated her life to hospice for animals. They did have a residence on LI, but started to receive a lot of flack from the neighbors. I was out there once, and what an amazing setup. All animals are free to sleep with them and roam the house on there own free will. There were dogs there that had paralyzed back legs and they were running around with walkers for dogs. I would look into this place, however I am not sure how far away they are now that they have moved.
Looks like about 150 miles from me, Marty also sent me a link which I would like to keep in the thread Blind Dog Rescue Alliance

BDRA is working hard to find Tuffy a new home, They have him up on there site and there facebook page. I have received a few call's from them this week. They want to know how he is with other dogs and cats. I can not say for sure how he is because he has not been with other pets unless they count being kenneled.

Oh my Frank, I am so sorry to hear of your troubles with your beloved pet. I lost 2 dogs in one year, one put down , other died suddenly after a recovery from cancer, well a remission from cancer. it is so hard, they truly become part of the family. Good luck in your hard decision, this truly has made me cry..

Frank, I really feel for you as it is so hard to see a dog or cat going down hill healthwise and you know that they will nog get better.

A dog is such a loyal animal that I believe that he will suffer even more when he is no longer with you in your home. I personally feel that it is kinder to let him go.

I agree with Shaggy's comment as I felt that too with Taffy and I knew then that we made the right decision but it is very hard to make that decision.

Tuffy is still very play full and has much life in him and a ways to go. My main problem is I tore my Achilles Tendon back in Aug, I wore a removable boot for 2 months and I still wear it every so often(at least 2-3 days a week). In order for me to get better Tuffy has to go Every time I go down those 3 flights of stairs I am doing more damage to my ankle. Going down those steps every 2-3 hours has made my ankle worse. My doctor said that I am always going to have pain but the stairs is agravating it even more. I have to find him a home this coming week or think of something by the next week or he will have to be put down.

Frank, if it comes to that and you can't bear or don't think it's his time, try this no-kill Town shelter near me - Town of Hempstead: Animal Shelter & Control

this is NOT the North Shore Animal League - that is a completely different organization that I am not recommending for your/Tuffy's needs.

It is hard to have a pet who is ill. You will know when the time comes to make the right choice...

                        OMG My prayers were answered!
I received another call around Noon today from BDRA saying that found Tuffy a new home. HE has it made! He is getting full run of the house with no other pets in the house and a huge yard that is bigger than my whole block. This dog has a bigger home now than I do!
Only bad thing is I will not ever be able to visit him again since he will be over 5 hours drive up in Utica NY. This organization is great they did what they had to do behind the scenes and even have Runners that meet me part of the way so I only drive 2-3 hours and then they take the dog for the remaining trip. I have been teary eyed all day. I think Tuffy knows something is up with all the hugs and kisses he got from me today.

Marty thank you so much for all your work behind the scenes and finding this place

I know it's for the best.....I'm so happy that Tuffy will be living in such a nice home, and very well taken care of. Still, I feel your pain. I't a bitter sweet situation.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

I'm sorry you are going through such a hard time Frank. Sometimes you have to do what is best for your babies, human and non-human, and put your own needs aside. I give you credit and send you hugs.

Aw, Frank, I know how hard this is for you but you are doing out of love for your dog. They are so much a part of our family.
