I have heard that tipping a plumber is appropriate. What do you think is the right amount? Do any of you have an opinion on tipping a plumber in general?
Yeah--I don't tip the plumber unless he's gone above and beyond. My plumber looks at the job, gives me an estimate, and then (if it's a small, routine job), he does the work and leaves. Then I get a bill in the mail. No money changes hands when he does the work. Even more so if it's a big expensive job.
We generally tip $15-20 per person, which gernerally works out to about 10%. We are not real handy. Therefore, we have them come for minor repairs. Thank goodness our home is fairly new.

At the price they charge why would you ever want to tip them?
They already over charge on every job plus in most cases try for travel time too!
If you go away from a well known company you probably got taken for extra charges too. I have had to use a smaller company out of yellow pages couple times and both times they tried to take me for far more than some legit company would. One of the biggest games they play is no matter how much stock they have in the truck they love to go to the hardware for right part and this time being charged. We had one pull this and hardware was two miles from our home and he ws gone a hour and we had to pay it.
we have a wonderful neighbor who is a master plumber. when we eed a part, he tells my husband to go, he stops the clock, and then goes home and does paperwork or completes some other part of the job til my husband gets back.
My tip to a plumber would be to stop overcharging. I don't know how it is in other places but where I live a plumber makes about 4 times the amount I make and I'm not allowed to accept tips.
I can honestly say that in the last 22 years we've had one plumber that I felt was worth the money.
