  • Heat Pumps

Any of you Northerners, or, more likely, Mid-Southers, have a heat pump? Chances are Northerners won't have one.

If so, could you tell me the outside temp and the temp of your inside air at a vent when it is running?

    Thanks

33 out, with 90 at the vent. This maintains a 70 wall setting right beneath the air return.

My question is a moot point cuz our heat pump is mute.

      $4300.

(I can almost buy a house in Florida for that!!!!)

A couple things you need to know. In normal conditions the heat pump does not put out high temps. Just enough to raise the house temp. If the outside temp is down around 35 degrees or below the heat pump doesn't work. There is usually a backup electric or gas source it swirches to. In that case you get warmer air out of the vents.

I will havew to check on these and if they can be bought here, might be good option for here, I use a propane heater for a few months at night when on computer....do they heat a large area or only small areas or single rooms?

They are whole-house, same as central air, and both heat and cool by reversing valves. There are ground source and air source heat pumps.

They also warm at lower temps than 35, but are not as effective because they have less "heat" to pull from outside air. If the heat pump aspect fails to provide enough heat, they become an electric furnace, with strips that heat (electric resistance heat).

As you can tell from Post #2 above, they work pretty good at freezing. If one doesn't, it is not working right.

Some newer models heat effectively below zero outside temps:

"Most mini-splits can provide heat fairly effectively at temperatures as low as 0 degrees, Fahrenheit, with one Mitsubishi model able to work at outside temperatures as low as minus-13 degrees F."

They can also be set to Emergency Mode, which shuts down the outside (compressor) unit altogether. Then they function as a straight electric furnace. Our compressor is out, so we set ours on Emergency Mode, and we are warm. Since it is minus degrees outside, it would have been operating in Emergency Mode any way.

Ours is 20 years old and the worst new one now is probably 50% more efficient than when ours was new.

                    Hey?!

Do you still get like a manservant with your little place on the lake there? Someone to take care of it?

You did when they showed them to me back in the 70's.

How much of a pump would it take to bring lake water to the house? How cold is the lake water?

Not much, but that would not be allowed (USACE).

However, in the summer it is nice to bathe in.
