  • Did a meteor create Australia?

Fri Jun 2, 1:54 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - A meteor's roaring crash into Antarctica -- larger and earlier than the impact that killed the dinosaurs -- caused the biggest mass extinction in Earth's history and likely spawned the Australian continent, scientists said.

Some geologists also believe that a meteorite impact in what is now eastern Oregon created the Yellowstone volcano and reshaped the landscape of western North America.

That results of that impact also covered the Columbia basin in eastern Oregon and Washington with basalt lava flows over 1000 feet thick, and created a north south trending crack in the North American that extends from the hot spot down to New Mexico. Tectonic movement along that crack created the characteristic serices of north-south oriented mountains and valleys cover the entire SW U.S. from Colorado to California (the Basin-and-Range Province).

    “You shouldn't wear that body.”
