  • Wild weather weekend

Thinking of Steely Dan and a modified version of their song:
Storms to the West of me, Tornadoes to the East and here I am, stuck in the middle with several inches of rain.

    *************
That is how I started writing this. But then I saw the news, aerial picture of my old neighborhood. Wife said maybe we should go and see what our property is like and what we need to do.

Took a long time to get there, roads were pretty much closed.

Now, after a trip to my rental property, a house where I lived for 12 years and have owned for over 19 years, .

    Every tree is gone.
One tree went into the neighbors house and car.
My 3 sections of fence are totaled.
None of my renters cars were damaged. The trees fell around, but not onto them.
Lost some of the roof shingles, but not enough. Roof is at least 20, probably closer to 25 years old and really needs to be replaced and I was hoping insurance would take care of that, but likely not enough damage.

Don't know what is next. Cars can not move because of all the trees down. Don't know how the insurance inspector is going to get there. Going to be an interesting week coming up.
    Don

I'm sorry your home was in the path of mother nature's wrath. Sounds like it could have been worse. Hang in there.

We've been following SW MO tornados for the last 2 hours. The Joplin one just missed us by 20 miles. Joplin is decimated.

Another tornado one county out, bearing down on us.

Eerie looking at the photos of North Minneapolis.

I remember the Fridley tornadoes - must have been about 45 years ago. Even on the south side those storm cells were ugly - black and gray and twisting and churning like I'd never before seen in a thunderstorm.

7:00 AM: Another large, severe thunderstorm has formed just west of Joplin and is heading for it right now. Al Roker is reporting it, and there it is on NWS radar.

Many there have no shelter and the second door-by-door grid search, by daylight, is scheduled to start in a couple hours.

89 confirmed dead, but it has to go much higher.

The husband of the couple that goes to Florida with us just finished up a several-month project at St. Johns Regional Medical Center, that got destroyed.

That tornado stayed together and continued on to the SE, and is the one that went 20 miles north of us. More damage throughout rural areas. Medical records, photos, personal effects are being found more than 60 miles from where they were picked up.

There were at least three other confirmed tornado storms that tracked a little further south, going due east, right over us. We sat in the basement and watched it on two TV stations and NWS radar.

The weather has been really scary lately. My heart goes out to all those who have been in the path of the violent storms. And they don't seem to be letting up. A long time ago, I thought we should have a water pipeline across the country so that areas getting way too much rain (like those along the Mississippi) could divert water to areas where it's really needed.

& for a long time I have been hearing that idea . . . I think since the first aquaducts were built.

In some cases, the old ways actually were better ways.

I know what you are talking about. Fridley and St. Anthony both had gotten hit badly many years ago.

I don't know if you have seen aerial pictures of the two tornadoes that went through. There are trees to the left and right of the path and 5 miles of roof but no trees.

This is the first time I have walked through a tornado destruction path. Amazing. Destroyed garage and the motor opener was found 3 houses away. No damage to one location and total destruction next to it. I have 7 trees in my yard, 6 went down. The one that did not fall was right next to the renter's cars.

Exit roads from I-94 to North are closed to keep lookers out. I want to get there to take picture for my insurance company. Going to be an interesting (and likely very expensive for me) next few days.

VEry sorry to hear about the severe weather you are having. Hearing about from you makes it worse then watching on TV. Good Luck.

All day at work yesterday, because our customers are outside in weather's harm's way, we talked about the severe thunderstorm/high wind/large hail warning for today . . . later. I watch weather radar there.

Then, boom!!! Everything yesterday just popped up, Joplin's immediately west of them, giving them no warning.

                        Today's warnings are still there.

I agree. It makes the surreal very real. My thoughts are with all in the affected areas.

I have not stopped posting because my thoughts and prayers are not with everyone in Joplin.

I have stopped because information is so readily available.

The death toll is up to 119, I believe, and there are so many piles that useta be houses and businesses that have not been gone through yet.

Here at home, the rains continue, the same storms still pouring on Joplin, and severe flooding has got to be imminent. Total rainfall for the last month is 24 inches. Normal would be four inches. More tornados today. Worse forecast for tomorrow.
