Big Frank posted something like that, but I still don't understand the physics of it. What forces the cork out? After the wall hit, is there a recoil or back force of wine to push out the cork?

I've never tried it. I surmise that there must be a recoil effect. And because the neck of the bottle is so much skinnier than the bottom, the pressure generated by the wave hitting the cork would be multiplied about 10x as compared with the pressure generated when it rebounds off the bottom.

Someday I'll get a bottle of three-buck chuck for cooking, and try to open it with a shoe.

I would think it is the air preasure. It is acting like a soda bottle when you shake it it releases gases which pushs the cork out. I would have bet that this could not be done if I had not seen the video. Now I am thinking on trying this with my friends. Also I think with a rubber cork this may not work but who knows for sure

I would think the air pressure would have a minimal effect as it would compress and not have the force. The narrowing neck sounds good, like a hydrolic system on large equipment.

I have enough corks and bottles sitting around, I may experiement with the volume of air/liquid (water) to see what happens with less liquid, normal liquid and excess liquid.

I watch Mr Wizard as a kid, I think this would be his kind of experiment.

I also doubt the air pressure. The more I think about it the more I think it's the pressure wave set up when the bottle strikes the wall. I think you also need to have firm grasp of the bottle in your hand so that the cork takes up all of the impact energy of the pressure wave instead of the energy being expended in the friction of the bottle sliding through your hand.

Here's another using a phonebook instead of a shoe - same principle. http://youtu.be/rafqCGfVj2I

              I did it

But I am tired after doing it. It took probably more than 20 sharp strikes. I started with my normal shoes, but they are cushioned. I switched to my dress shoes, harder frame to them. I hit them on the cement steps, only really solid surface without give around. It took a lot of very firm hits to have the cork come out, but it does work.

I gave up on my experiment for tonight. The corking process is usually done wet for more give on the corks to have easier insertion into the bottle. I think this wet cork would cause problems in the experiment. I'll save it for another time.

What kind of cork did you open up rubber or the old cork type.

Regular cork 1-1/4", not composite or synthetic.

                    Good for you, Vintner!

This YouTube video must have gotten the attention of the Modern Family writers -- they incorporated into this week's show - I laughed out loud.

But Claire did it in three or four strikes

How do you know that? Do you have inside info on that show. and yes I have the hot's for Sophia.
I was out last night and I was going to try it at my friends bar but since we were not paying for the wine it did not make sense to bet. I wanted to bet one of the guys that I can do it. BTW there is another video where the guy bangs it on a phone book with no shoe which looks easier.
