Our favorite Florida restaurant is on our suspect list.

. . . David Carlson of Tampa had his account information stolen after he dined at the Shells seafood restaurant on North Dale Mabry Highway four times last year.

. . . Employees working for the thieves can use a device to spread a virus through a restaurant's computer systems, or thieves can hack directly into the systems and spread the malicious software, Joyce said.

Tampa police said that is what happed at La Teresita and Shells. Since the breach in January, the owners of the restaurants said they have checked their systems and upgraded security.

Jack Rudowsky said he and six other friends dined at Shells Seafood, 202 S. Dale Mabry Highway, on Jan. 23. Six people used their credit cards to pay, and one settled her check with cash, he said.

The next day, Rudowsky and his friends who used cards at the restaurant, were called by their banks.

"They told me I had a $200 and $130 charge in New Jersey," said Rudowsky, 80. "I told them, 'No, I can't be in two places at once. I'm in Tampa."

To me from the Tampa police:

Shells did everything right for their customers when they discovered the problem. They contacted us and asked a detective to come in and investigate. They hired a company to look at their computer system. unfortunately this a new way for criminals to steal and we will probably see more of it in the future.

I'm still dealing with the aftermath of this situation. The problems are with Bank of America getting our statement, late charges, interest, and so forth straightened out.

Ugh. Sorry to hear it is still going on. I truly dislike all the banks.

I'm currently only using American Express, Paypal mastercard and Discover. They all could be attached to a bank somewhere, but at least I "feel" better about not supporting the evil bank people when I use my cards.

There was another story on the Tampa news last night. A car was stopped on I-75 for illegal window tint, and the two guys in it had 44 bogus credit cards, loaded with skimmed information, good for up to $380,000 in purchases.

The Tampa police took the opportunity to show how easy it is to skim data off the magnetic strip with a small, handheld device, and then run a card with a blank magnetic strip through it to load it onto another card.

They said we have not even begun to see how bad it's gonna be. They actually said to use cash wherever you can.

Let me see if I can remember the four places most likely to get your credit card compromised:
