  • Grill help

Ok, you guys have been awesome. I got my new Gevalia coffeemaker, have ordered my Omaha steaks, and now my grill is dead. I have been to all the available suspects (yes, even Costco), and it seems like the best value for what I'm looking for (36" grilling surface w/stainless grates and burners) is at Sears in a Kenmore. Anyone have any experience with them? The warranty is not as good as Weber, but price is like half. Fortunoff's is similar, feels a bit sturdier, but is $350 more. I know the grates will hold up, but am concerned about the ignitor, I hate when those crap out on me.

Any help soon would be appreciated, sale ends tonite.

    Thanks
    Avery

We just bought a used Weber on craigslist for $60. Not the top of the line...but we need to cannibalize the parts to fix our old Weber. Usually Weber is so great, but we need one little connector piece and they want us to buy a whole new manifold for $65 plus shipping.

So for $60, we got, at the very least, an extra tank (around $20 to buy new) filled with propane (about $20 now). And we just used the new (old) grill to make dinner.

Just an idea. I was starting to think about a new Weber, but they're up in the $500 range now, and we've probably sunk at least $100 into our old one, with new grills, new Flavorizer bars, new hose assembly after the squirrels chewed through the old one (!!!)....

      Buy a Weber

Hope I don't jinx myself BUT our Weber Genesis 3 Burner is going into it's 10 year. It lives and works on the deck outside year round.I've replaced the dripping pan for $15. That's it.

Thought I had to replace the burners this spring but the local dealer told me to take a wire brush to them and that fixed that problem.

Way back in 1995 they were selling for $600 and it has paid us back in reliability.

JFYI Weber bought out their main upscale competitor Ducane.

Is the Genesis the one with the porcelain burners/grill racks or are they stainless?

The comparable model now would be the Genesis Silver B . Sears carries them for $499 but you could probably do a bit better, I know the Home Despot carries Weber.

All I know is I push the clicker and the thing lights EVERYTIME. The cross-over ignition is the best part.

I sorta have a reputation for enjoying BBQ , but I've never gotten into grills with all the bells and whistles.

Our Subeams do just fine (both our grills and our car ), and I'm sure they'll never go out of business.

I have a Sunbeam, and needed a new valve Assembly this Spring, and guess what? They did go out of business!

I have never been one for the "bells & whistles" either, but have been looking the past week at Weber based on reports I have read, and made the decision yesterday to buy the Genesis Gold B locally, assembled $599. Figure at 57 it will outlive me.

                  Well, duh!

We have two Grillmasters, from the days when we had two houses, well, actually four houses, six timeshares and 68 lake lots. But, anyway I keep em going with baling wire and duct tape. Sometimes the duct tape is a problem.

I figure what the heck, if that kept my go cart mostly going when I was 10 . . .

Great timely topic! We have been thinking of ordering a 50,000 BTU BroilMate with side burner....anyone got any opinions on the Broilmate brand?

I have a Char-Broil, but I don't recall the exact model. I've got the brass burners with lifetime warranty. It's three years old, and they've already replaced them once. Stood behind the warranty - the parts were shipped free, and they sent a bunch of miscellaneous replacement parts along with it.

I got the unit with four burners. I love having four burners - the GrillMaster the Char-Broil replaced was a three burner unit. With three burners I couldn't keep the temperature low enough for real slow cooking. Also, with three burners it was hard to keep from direct heating some things that needed to be indirect heated, and vice versa.

I would never get another grill without four burners.

This one here from Amazon looks like a great deal right now. It is on sale so you never know when the price will go up or down with them. No tax and a penny to ship it. I do not think you can find a better deal than this SS 4 burner with side burner for $359 total. If you want the 5 burner that one is about $700

And you call yourself "T. R. Oglodyte"! I only have gas after eating baked beans. Charcoal is the only way to BBQ.
Seriously, I do a lot of indirect cooking and smoking and I have never been able to get a good smoke flavor with a gas grill. I just bought the Silver Smoker for $160 at Home Depot. I use the offset chamber for direct cooking. If needed, I can put charcoal in the upper portion for a huge cookout. There is a hole in the top where you mount a thermometer. I can hold 250-275 degrees all day by stoking the offset chamber and not have to open the big chamber.

I totally agree about charcoal. But I don't like putting a charcoal grill on a wood deck. I do have a charcoal smoker that I occasionally use.

Mosat of the time when I slow cook, I want a temp of about 200 deg F. I wasn't able to get that until I went to a four-burner unit.
