I haven't been suspended OY since the old "GinGin" days, so I don't know what they do now or if they use an infraction system like we do here. This topic reminds me that I haven't insulted JLB in quite a while.
From what I have read those OH have at least a cursory respect for the first amendment. As for those OY, I'm not so sure, but I wouldn't judge the entire place on the inability to understand the subtleties of English context demonstrated by one volunteer.

I will just add that sometimes people volunteer for positions of power over others because of "less" than pure intentions.

As the old saw goes : Power corrupts. Absolute power is kind of neat.

No, that's the entire thread, nothing deleted.

Therein lies the cruxt of the dilemna, I believe.

As for the 1st Amendment, it only applies to Internet forums if the owner decides it does.

Visiting an Internet site is likened to visiting a person's home, and you play by whatever rules that homeowner has in place.

All forums I have been on have their Inner Circle and the tone and operation of the forum is set by them. Normally less than a dozen . . . and they have their little falling outs, too.

On some, as few as one person plays that role.

Some forums are totally unmoderated, and it is the very uncivil nature of them that moderated forums use to their justify behavior modifification.

Even a very ugly forum like Topix has some moderation. I recently saw a thread on a Topix forum deleted. Very unusual as they are normally a donneybrook of low-level rants.

I think I see what happened: TUGBrian thought you had insulted Kieth with your old man comments when as I read it actually you were "insulting" a coworker who is not a OY member?

If that is the case then it was a failure to "read and comprehend" the data before pulling the trigger on a suspension (for you) by TUGBrian.

In TUGBrian's defense your use of pronouns may have been confusing to someone just scanning the thread quickly.

I would hope a moderator would read the thread carefully before "pulling the trigger" on a suspension - but I often hope to win the Lotto as well

              Not exactly, but . . .

In a subsequent subsequent discussion here, Keith said he did not feel I insulted him.

If I'm not mistaken, he resigned OY.

The hair trigger was because of my many years of abusive behavior, SOB (Son on Bill) being influenced by those preceding him, handing over their list.

On internet forums, there are users who are in favor and those who are out of favor. Those in favor generally are given a little more leeway when it comes to stuff like badgering other users. If they are badgering someone who is out of favor, they are given a lot more leeway.

Ask any cop (retired, maybe) . . . it does not take much evidence against someone. A half dozen folks, either by design or coincidence, pointing the finger at the same person generally will convince others that the person is a problem.

Is old man an insult? Do I need to get younger?

I was a lifetime member OY since 1994 when I was the moderator. I left there 2 months ago and have not, nor will, return back. I just got fed up with there heavy handed censorship, especially against those that they deemed not to be part of their cult. The last straw was when Brian attacked this web site with his lies.

                  Yeah, I was once a volunteer there, too, 1999 or 2000, but . . .

It should speak for itself that both sides of the moderating problem OY are welcome and post on TS4Ms, but the same is not true OY.

Even in fear of sounding like an old man, given many of the young people I encounter, I'll stick with old man.

To totally take this thread elsewhere, do you think that today's young parents, generally speaking, have the same drive, committment, and personal sacrifice that former generations of parents had to provide their kids a better life than they have/had?

What were we talking about again?

In general no. Too many parents today only think of themselves and are not willing to sacrfice for their children.

I think the previous generation had no thoughts of their children at all...complete neglect compared to todays parents...if you look back to the 90's parents were both working 8-12hrs a day...MOST kids were latchkey, having to learn how to microwave from 2nd grade up and when the parents DID get home from work....they were too tired to give a 'poop' about their kids...plus divorce rates in general show just how selfish the previous generations parents were...

They not only neglected their kids to keep their 401k's and Mcmansions funded...but they broke up dispite the effects it had on the kids....the previous parents generation was about the worst we could ever have

As Op I'm OK with wandering in the woods - after all I still have 5 days to go of being a "pariah".

My parents never gave a rats rear about the next gen and neither did their parents - my family has a long tradition of "you're 18 - there's the door - write if you get work"

I have done OK on my own and I have stayed fairly well connected with my family all these years.

I think it depends on when the first generation immigrated to the US and culture. I don't think you can generalize to everyone.

I have been away with out internet, I just saw this thread and I am locking it now. I respect Brian as he respects me and I do not want to see this thread become a Tug bashing thread of any kind.
Ampaholic you are welcome to post here but please refrain form posting negative posts about OY. We are trying to stay at peace with each other and it becomes hard when threads like this pop up..
