  • You guys almost lost me - deer in the middle of the road.

I posted this on the Out of the Office... I will be gone from 6-9-06 to 6-13-06. But since it was a hell of an experience I thought I would post it here too.

I am back home from the Redwood Run. I had a great time. Everyone was partying & having fun. There were some beautiful motorcycles there. The music was great - SKYNYN LYNNYRD (Lynryd Skynyrd Tribute Band) and Foreigner (whom I have not seen since the 70’s).

The weather was nice - high 70’s to low 80’s so not too hot. But I am glad to be home and sleeping in my own bed .

Pat, I had fun watching the wet t-shirt contest.

The best part of this weekend was I won the lottery two times this weekend, once here on TS4MS and once on the road. On Friday night around 10pm, I was riding the Harley Davidson (1986 soft tail 1300cc - - beautiful motorcycle). It was dark. I was on Highway 101, a two-lane road in the Redwoods, doing about 60mph. I was still on my way to the Redwood Run when I approached a bend in the road. There were two deer standing in the middle of the road. By the time I seen them, I was 30ft from them and moving 60mh. I slammed on my brakes and went in to a slide. The moment I realized I was going to lay the motorcycle down, I let go of the brakes and turned the bike to the left hitting one of the deer’s head with my leg & knee, moving about 40mph at this time. I then gave the bike some gas to get it under control. Thank goodness that deer did not move one step towards me. I managed to keep the bike from crashing and hitting the pavement or running right in to the deer. I did not stop to see if the deer was all right but I did slow down after that incident. (I was relieved to find out when I stopped at the next gas station, however, that 2 other bikers who also stopped there 5-10 minutes later saw 2 deer walking on the side of the highway. I’m glad I have been riding motorcycles on dirt trails in the Sierras since I was in 4th grade and learned how not to lose my head in these situations.

Were you wearing a helmet or are you an NFL-SuperBowl-winning-quarterback?

Glad to know you skirted death and spared Bambi.

On a bike that sure doesn't sound like a fun time at all....

I hit a big buck about a year ago with my 1997 Ford Expedition. I was going about 70-75 on the PA Turnpike in the passing lane with cars in front of me, beside me, and behind me and it was about 7 PM in the winter so it was dark.

The next thing I know I look up and this really nice sized buck was in my lane running away from me. We were no more then 30-60-feet from the buck and hit him in under a second at 70 or so...

We hit the buck solid in the front bumper and he bounced off the left side of the truck. He bent in the bumper close to a foot and it cost us about $3000 or so to get the truck fixed. The person behind us said all they saw was my brakes and blood and fur.

I honestly hate to think what the buck would have done to a small car, much less if I were to be on a bike... I am real glad you and the Hog made out in the deal!

        Eeeeeeeeeeeek!

I'm so glad you kept your cool. Deer can cause a lot of damage.

What would I have done without you?

I am glad you had a good time but don't scare me like that.

Yikes...that sounds like a close one. I'm really glad that both you and the deer were not injured....

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

Yes I was wearing a helmet. But my leg & knee was not. There is a large bruise on my leg.

Thank goodness the Angels were with you! Be sure to have that leg checked, you never know what a bruise can be hiding! So glad to know you are safe and that you had such a cool head!

Phew! Glad you knew how to handle this situation. I had a close call with a moose a couple of years ago in Vermont...in a car, though) me, not the moose!)...totally unpredictable, and you have to go on sheer instinct.

That kind of experience is scarey enough when you are in a car, if I had been on a bike the skidmarks wouldn't only have been on the road

We were in the Scottish Highlands some years ago, my wife was driving, when she spotted a deer run across the road about 50 yards ahead. My wife braked gently and I asked her why she had done that. She said "If there's one, there's probably another one". No sooner had she said that than another deer ran out about 10 yards ahead of us, and she had to slam the brakes on. If she hadn't had the presence of mind to slow down we would certainly have hit it. We were talking about the incident a couple of nights later in a pub and the landlord said a friend of his had his car totalled in a crash with a deer a couple of weeks earlier.

                              Faust,
Katiemack is very correct. If it's a large bruise and located on your lower leg, please have it checked out asap. It is not my intent to alarm you, but large, lower leg bruises can be the source of emboli (clots) especially in the calves or behind the knee and I don't mean the kind we all get from a bump here and there. This sounds like there was some serious impact/force behind it. Get it checked out, please.

(That'll be $20 for the consult)

P.S. We have a home in Vermont and there was a very sad incident involving a bike and a moose.
