  • SIL Got Fired

Some of you may have met her . . . she was DOOGOO in Nashville.

She went in today and her boss's boss called her in and said, "I'll walk you to you car. We'll pack your stuff up and get it to you."

    After 15 years or so.

    Lot of that going around.

Been there. Done that. From both sides of the desk. More than once from each side.

I know it was a shock. May she find something quickly if that's what she wants. If it were me, I'd take a vacation!! shaggy

The best job security comes from being involved in sales that are based on personal trust and relationship, and being successful in that role. You get established as a "go to" person in your field, so that when clients needs that service they go to you to get it done they way they need it to be done.

It doesn't mean that you won't get fired; there is absolutely nothing that will keep you from being fired or laid off. It does mean that when they tell you to pack up (or they pack their things for you) you go out the door with your clients in pocket.

If you can bring in work there's always someone else ready to hire you, or you can open your own shop. But when you can generate your own business you don't need to depend on someone else. Early in my career I realized that being in a situation where I needed someone else to feed me work was not what I wanted for myself and my family. So I made sure that I was supporting myself, and that I was the one who was feeding other people.

Last company that dumped me naively thought they owned the client relations, not me. They tried to backfill around me, but every single one of my clients went out the door with me. I remember siting in one of my client's offices one time shortly after they let me go when one of the principals from my old company called in, trying to maintain client relations and follow up on work opportunities. My client smiled at me, wrote a note to me to be quiet, then put the call on speaker phone so I could hear.

That is a very uncomfortable situation for either side. I hope she finds something quickly if that's what she wants & needs.

I think that any long term job is gone now. Most of us in the +/-50 range may be the last of the boomer generation that gets to see ~25 years with one employer. I know my one sister, that is 10 years younger, thinks nothing of job shopping and hops every few years. Usually upward.

In this trouble economy no job in commission sale is safe from the Axe.

No job anywhere is safe. The best security is to put yourself in a position where you can generate your own work instead of depending on other people to feed you.

If a company is stupid enough to fire someone who is actually generating work, supporting themselves and others, no one at that company is safe and the person who was let go can find someone smarter who will hire them.

sorry to hear it. hope she at least got severance and can get unemp.

my cohort got canned last week but was within 90 day "probationary period" so no hope of severance or unemp. He wasn't a good fit, but he sure worked his ass off trying to be.

Agree that no job is safe, but I've worked with those "job security people" that refuse to let anyone know how they do something because they think it makes them safe. That's just worse. We are all expendable, but I do try to make myself irreplaceable. But not by being cagey with how I conduct company business!!

I consider myself fortunate to have a great job. It's not something I take for granted.

But I really do feel for those that have been with the same company for a very long time and get let go. It's a major adjustment for those folks.

Please wish her well for me. SOmetimes these things are a blessing in disguise. It sure was for me.

Sorry to hear. It must have been devestating for her. Hopefully there will be a bright side, and she will find a better, more satisfying position elsewhere.

It's so tough out there today and no job is secure except for some who do not deserve it, IMHO, but you will have to read about it in our political forum. We have one here but you will have to opt-in and abide by the rules. I believe that this is the link.

Do I sense something in that statement?

                            &

Perhaps that is why I'm not there.

Anyway, SIL has not decided what to do. Our sister-in-law quarters have been offered.

                              Sorry!!

The past few years have been "A bad time at Black Rock" for a lot of folks. By the way, we live 110 miles from Nashville, but do not know what a DOOGOO is.
