  • Getting FREE credit report

I went to Equifax.com to get free credit report. Filled out 1st page, inc SS#.

Went to 2nd page and it asks for info for method of payment. I thought you can 1 per year free. What am I doing wrong? TIA

Free is not what it once was. Before anything "free" is given up, there will be many attempts to sell a program with the free info.

I think you need to start from annualcreditreport.com. When you go to the credit reporting services, they don't have to provide it free. If you want your credit score, that is extra and cost less than $10.

I generally do one of the services from the annual report service, then 3-4 months later I do a second of the services and again 3-4 months later, I get the third free service report. The credit score numbers from one service will not match the others, but the credit report will be fairly close.

There are places on the net that charge you a fee to provide you information they got for you free. Check out the place you request information from because you may have been able to get it free. Lots of middle men out there.

In both Canada and US you can get a copy of your credit report for free. However, it is important to note that the one you get for free is somewhat different than the one online in that you do not get your FICO score. You also have to mail and then wait for your credit report in the mail. I check mine annually, and have recently started paying for the one time a year for convenience to make sure nothing negative has happened I do not know about.

Also, the reason that it is possibly asking for method of payment is because in order to get your free credit report online there is probably a catch that you have to sign up for something else. Try the link "request your report through the mail" and see what happens there (I can't being from Canada).

You are entitled to free reports if you have been denied credit. Even then it is like pulling teeth as all three agencies will stonewall you.

I have been calling and getting them free for a few years now, (one every four months from a different agency - we're allowed 1 free from each agency per year in Mass. - not sure if all states are the same), the reports are free - a credit score is $7.95. The numbers I've got:

              Experian 1-888-397-3742

              Equifax 1-877-322-8228

              Trans Union 1-800-888-4213

Hope this helps. It's just a few short questions over the phone, (automated), and they're here in about a week.

I heard of a sight called Credit Karma Free Credit Score & Credit Report Card. No Credit Card Needed that gives you free reports and scores. I have not tried it because we are in Mexico right now and I do not trust the internet security. But it was one of those money guys on TV - Clark Howard, I think - who recommended it.

If someone does this, and gets a credit report, free, could you please let us know.

                  Thanks.

I also believe this is the way to get your free reports. Tried it when it was first offered years and years ago, however, only got one as I never got past the security questions on the other two. One didn't like my answer to the 'city' in which I lived (live in the county and there are 3 postal designations for my area ) and one wanted to know who my mortgage was through. As if I knew...used a mortgage broker and it was sold 3 times within the first year.

IIRC you could get the report sent via phone request or mail request; if phone, you had to get past the security questions. I'll try the mail route this time as this is something we should be doing regularly.
