I have never been to LAX. Does Delta use the same terminal for their domectic flights? My ds, who has never traveled alone, is flying to Santa Barbara and has to change planes. His other choices would be changing in Denver or Phoenix. I am trying to make this as easy as possible. TIA

But the flight from LAX to SBA will be on a puddle jumper (regional carrier) - most likely American Eagle. American Eagle operates out of the Commuter Terminal, which involves taking a shuttle from the main terminal to the commuter terminal.
You don't need to leave the airport and go through security - the shuttle bus leaves directly from one of the gates in the main terminal.

Note that Delta does not have any flight operations at all at SBA - there are no Delta operated flights into or out of SBA from any airport anywhere. Any Delta flight into SBA that you are considering uses a codeshare partner for that leg of the trip. To figure out connection logistics for any routing you are considering, you need to know exactly which airline is actually operating the flight to Santa Barbara.“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”

That being said, he simply goes to the gate (should be in Terminal 5) where the shuttle bus loads. When the bus arrives, an agent will open the gate, and he will go down stairs to the tarmac, where he will get on the shuttle. The shuttle will then take him across the taxiways to the American Eagle terminal.
It's pretty simple - just find the gate, sit down, and wait for the agent to load people. If he has questions, Delta has a help desk in Terminal 5.“Maybe you shouldn't dress like that.”
