  • Best Credit Card for International Travel

Which is the best credit card for international travel, doesn't charge a yearly fee, doesn't charge a yearly fee, etc.?

  • #2
Look at Chase Sapphire (no fee first year only)

It DOES have an annual fee after the first year. Sometimes it is possible to get the fee waived by calling to ask at the one year anniversary.

Right now it has a 50K Chase Ultimate Reward points bonus after you hit a minimum spend (not sure of the amount). 50K points are worth a minimum of $500.

No foreign transactions fee. Double points on any travel expenses including timeshare MF.

Chase Ultimate Rewards points are quite valuable. They transfer to United Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and many more, plus several hotel chains.

You can also earn very large points bonuses for online shopping through the Chase UR Mall.

Looking for one that doesn't charge a yearly fee?

FWIW, AMEX is probably the worst cuz so many merchants will not accept it, cuz AMEX gouges them.

Capital One. No annual fee. No foreign transaction fee. $1 per point spent.

Some say that Capital One exchange rate is not as good but we did not see that last summer in Asia.

We are in London right now using our Capital One card. Last month we were in Mexico. The exchange rate is outstanding. It is at least as good at the day rate posted on xe.com - sometimes better. We get cash back at 1.25% and there is no annual fee or no foreign exchange fee. We also have the Capital One debit card which has free ATM use all over the world with the same great rates.

I also use Capital One in Foreign Countries...I opened a savings account and use a debit card to access cash at ATM's and a credit card fdor regular credit card purchases. Do notify them of your travel plans so you don't trigger their fraud protection...

I've had the CapitalOne card for just over a year and use it for foreign travel. I just opened up the online checking account a few days ago. Easy to do. I am waiting now for the debit cards to arrive.

My only issue with them is they gave me a very low starting credit line, despite my high FICO score and high family income level. I believe this is because I applied just under my own name and I am a stay at home mom. Credit givers are not supposed to count that against me, but it does.
