What a fabulous collection of photos. How we have changed over the years, some of those 'gang members' look like to be about 12 years old lol. I wouldn't want to cross those Ladies of East Harlem (picture 3), one hit with those handbags and you'd be down and out. Something a little sad about those sweet little children wearing silly hats and sober faces though (picture 8).

Thanks for sharing that. I've recently starting working in a library. This is the exact section I have began spending time in. There are so many stories, poems and picture books related to Harlem that when I'm shelving books-they sometimes have to come find me. I mean how can you just put them away without picking up another and becoming enthralled with it?

I'm all current on Cuba, Idiot Savants and Identity Theft too

Oooh, I'm so envious. I used to love disappearing into our old library's labyrinth of shelves, quietly sitting cross legged in some nook hoping not to be disturbed. Do you have one of the new community friendly libraries? We do . I like the idea that groups of teenagers hang out there, I find that funny but nice. It's the boisterousness of them running up and down, flirting, playing, laughing and filling the place with noise and the smell of fast food hot fat that I haven't got used to yet.
