things to see/do in New England in September

I am trying to put together a trip to the New England area for a week in September. We will be traveling by car.
What are some sights or places to tour that are not too taxing for moderate active senior citizens. I will have to keep them busy with an agenda full. My 76 year old mom will let me know if she is bored. Suggestions on places to eat are also welcomed. Thanks

Tough to answer---so many places so many different things to see and do. There's Cape Cod, Newport RI, the Berkshires, the White Mountains and Lakes regions of NH, Vermont's Green mountains, coastal Maine and Acadia National Park. September is usually a month for good weather-tho in some areas it is the ending of the tourist season until leaf season.
