  • Which Phone?

I just want a new cellphone. Don't care about internet usage. Clear calls, camera, easy to text. Don't want to pay for it either. Right now I can get one of the following -

    Impulse 4G
    Samsung Captivate
    Blackberry Curve (9300)
    HTC Inspire

I have read some reviews but they seem to be more focused on the media aspects rather than the phone. Any pros/cons?

Generally phones that have internet capacity REQUIRE you to take a data package >$20 per month.
    Something to consider.

I have an iPhone (I realize not on your list) but my son has a Droid and is happy with it. We use Verizon as our carrier.

edit - my old phone was a Blackberry Curve - very easy to text as there is a dedicated keyboard - but the internet was not good on that teeny screen. It was fine for email but very difficult to use the browser. I know u do not care, but if u r paying for a service, you want it to be good - and it was not.
Never lost a call but as u know, that is related to your carrier and where u r.

If one of these 4 choices is a phone with a full touch screen similar to the iPhone (or my sons Droid) I would go for that one.

Let me add that if your carrier is Verizon, then you want to do it before 4/22. After that date they will begin charging a 30.00 upgrade fee

I'm WAY overdue for a new phone. I think I'm going IPhone but I just need something basic for my DD...and apparently I need to get it done by 4/22.

Oh, no. I didn't even see any regular phones offered.

        Stressy, I have AT&T.

I have Boost Mobile. You buy the phone you want from their selection, and then it's $50 per month for unlimited talk/text/data for the first six months, then $45 for the next six months, then $40 after that. There's a $5/month upcharge for certain phones--Blackberries, I think? I've been pretty happy with them.

If you just want a phone for occasional talking and texting, I recommend Tracfone. Phones are not super-fancy, but they're serviceable, and it's as low as $7 per month to keep them going.

It's the only phone I have so I have 550 mins shared with my mom who uses about 10 mins a month. I also have 200 texts which I come close to using up.

Pat - I was at an AT&T store with a friend a couple of weeks ago. Hubby still likes to have just a phone and prefers the flip style so that he does not dial someone when the phone is in his pocket. So, while my friend was checking a problem with her bill, I looked a phones that hubby might like since he is due for a new one - his Razr is 5 years old. They do still have a few non-internet flip phones. I don't remember that any were free, but I saw 2 that were about $30.

Like Grayfal said, many of the snazzy looking ones require a $20 monthly internet/data plan to. You will also need a texting plan or pay per text. There are several texting plans with AT&T. We have decided that we do not need to text and whenever we do send or recieve a text it costs us 20 cents. We prefer calls and email.

I really did not need the iPhone, but hubby said one of us probably needed to have a smartphone that we could use if we needed the options sometime, so I have one. While I have the option to check email on my iPhone, I seldom do. I do not want to use my phone for a mini computer - I have a laptop for email and surfing the net.

                I already have a text plan - $5 for 200 texts. I won't pay for a phone.

                  Pat,

You can also look at places like Best Buy. Do you have Best Buy near you? I see basic phones online for free (well, you still pay tax on full value) for AT&T... just look for the styles that don't mention a data package. That's what I'm going to do for my daughter. Best Buy has the phone she is interested in for 29.00 whereas it's 99.00 at the Verizon Store.

                  Food for thought.

I liked the BBerry Curve if AT&T will let you use it without a internet plan. Not familiar with the others.

I ended up getting a Samsung Infuse 4G and taking a $20 data package after all. The phone was free.

My 1 yr old flip phone broke. Wouldn't turn on for a few months. I seldom use my cell phone so I use "pay as you go"..$25 refill lasts me more than 3 months,

Decided I'd buy an ATT smart phone just to be with it. Didn't use any of the "smart" features so didn't purchase data plan. Lost the phone at the Borgata casino after having it about 2 mo.

For for some unknown reason my flip phone now turns on. Got a new SIM card (free) from ATT and I'm in working order again. Will use it until it dies again but know I don't need a smart phone. Expensive lesson for me but at least I learned from it.
