  • A Great Lady Died Yesterday

    My Aunt.

Roberta Smith, Auntie Bobbie, Sister Marie Barot, in Bensalem, PA, at age 90.

She became interested in Catholicism when she visited a Catholic friend around age 10. When she fell in love and a wedding was being planned, she insisted on it being Catholic. Her groom refused, so she joined a convent. He came to her and apologized, saying he would be happy with any kind of wedding, but she said it was too late.

She spent the rest of her life helping those most people do not even notice, or try to avoid.

She was not sheltered. She had a better perspective and world view than most people I know.

She was one of the good guys.

The last few years she watched over me from afar. She always knew when I needed a phone call. She always knew what situation I was dealing with. She helped me through all of them.

A half-hour before the tornado hit our dock, with me on it, on March 11, she called to warn me from 1200 miles away.

So, now the four Smith sisters from the big white house on Pierce Ave. in Council Bluffs, Iowa are all gone.

It is a sad day and our prayers are with you and your family. I know the feeling, I had 24 Aunts and Uncles and now there are only 10 they are range in age from 78-96 and some are in better health than others. Where has all the time gone!

Your aunt sounds like a truly gifted and loving Soul. JLB, you had such great fortune to have in your life. Hugs to you in your days of reminiscence and grief. She lives in your heart, and will do so, and I know you will feel her with you always. She loves you from the new place where she now resides. She must have been very proud to have you as a nephew.
Life is short, live it with this awareness.

I am terribly sorry to hear about the passing of your aunt. It certainly sounds as if she led a loving and fruitful life. She made a difference in the lives of the needy, as well as her family.

She will live on in the hearts and souls of those that she touched with her kindness.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss Jim.
She sounds like she was a very special lady.

My grandmother left us 3 years ago at 89 years young and I still miss her everyday.

It is our thoughts and memories that keep our loved ones with us.

She sounds like she was a very special lady.

I had the Daughters of Charity (Of St. Vincent) for nursing and the Sisters of St. Joseph for Bachelor's & Master's programs. They taught me a lot and in the spirit of giving. Nuns have taken a bad rap lately, but the overwhelming majority are selfless givers.
I would've liked to have met her personally.
