  • Poisonous Plants?

Researching plants of our new yard,,, as half are unknown to us.
So far Thorny Crabapple, Indian Hawthorne, Oleander, Rhoderdendra... Several others yet to identify.

    Questions:

What of these are/is harmful to pets and children, and how?

Any tips that may be of benefit?

    Hi Robert,

How are you both? I have heard that Orleanders are very poisonous for pets and children too but here are more plants that we all know to watch out for.

Most birds and animals know by instinct but not when they are puppies or tiny little kittens and certainly not toddlers or young children.

We hope to be less sickly. Definently have a less hectic life. Not close to town or our offspring.

Settled in, but now need to organize the clutter.

Different house means new furniture shopping.

Yard is landscaped without proper pruning. Crape Myrtle trees are brushy. Thorny Crab Apples and Oleander are overgrown, double. I'm busy correcting that. Spring will show much change.

I find no children or animals wandering unattended so toxic damage shouldn't present itself.
That link helped. Thanks for the tip.

the leaves of rhododendron and heir cousins the azaleas are poisonous but that being said, we live in the Pacific Northwest. The grow wild here - including in our yard. We also have many varieties that we planted. I have never, ever heard of anyone suffering death or eve illness from eating them. Also, rhubarb leaves are poisonous - many people grow rhubarb and the only problem I ever heard of was when a farmer gave the leaves to his pigs to eat.

When our Isabella was a puppy, she chewed rhododendron leaves. We called the vet and were advised to bring her right in. She was only 8 lbs so they said it would be very dangerous to her. They instilled activated charcoal to deactivate the toxins.
She also got into M&Ms once. Chocolate is also toxic to dogs, and again because she was so small they were concerned. That time we had to induce vomiting.

Oleanders are hazardous when burned so be careful how you dispose of pruned branches.
