Free version vs paid version

Is there any disadvantage to using the free vs paid versions of Microsoft works or word? Is there a big difference in performance?

Seems that I recall that the free version has adds and is missing things. Rather than find out, I am starting to use free Apache Open Office instead of Microsoft.

I downloaded open office and sent my 2 grands each a letter while they are at camp. It workeed great. Thanks to my 4m's friends.
