No problem with police officers here. I do have a problem with policies that put the public in harms way. High speed chases through crowded areas often times result in death of innocent bystanders. How is shooting in a crowded area any different ? It would have been better to follow the shooter to a less crowded area or home, imo.

From what I just heard on the news a construction worker pointed the shooter out and police were 8 ft away. The shooter pulled out the 45. Imo they did what had to be done.Originally posted by easyrider View PostNo problem with police officers here. I do have a problem with policies that put the public in harms way. For all we know if they had not shot there could be another 3 or 5 or 7 dead (how many bullets does a 45 hold?). I wasn't there and I'm pretty sure there will be an inquest so speculation is well - speculation.Rick

My guess is that the rule is not to get in a shootout with someone in a crowded area if you can avoid it. Most districts have an inquiry after any shooting that results in a death to see if the shooting was justified according to policy, but it's generally recognized that the cop on the scene has to analyze the situation. A policy where they absolutely forbid shooting in a populated area would be just as bad as one that told cops to shoot without worrying about where they were.

If you've ever been around the Empire State Building around nine a.m. on a weekday, you know that there ARE no uncrowded areas. There are pedestrians, many of them tourists, everywhere.Last edited by wackymother; 08-24-2012, 11:28 PM.
