I just came from my friends house, The one I mentioned that also had his AC that broke. Man is that house hot. They are getting fans from friends but I don't think it is helping. I gave him the idea to open his attic door and turn his attic fan on. This way the hot air will be pulled out. I feel ad that he is having company tomorrow. If it should rain they are all stuck inside.

Frank if I had had something planned I would have cancelled it.

The upper level of my home went up to 89 degrees yesterday WITH the window fans on. The fans did help though. I did get some sleep not great but 6 hours worth will have to do. The "boys" are still sleeping. The current temp up here is 79 but it is a muggy 79.

KatieMack our temps were similar to yours yesterday but surely you remember the accompanying humidity here in the northeast. Current humidity at 82%. All the gel and ponytails in the world aren't helping.

Even horseback riding is being done EARLY in the day or after 7 at night. There wasn't so much as a passing breeze all day yesterday to move this soup around. The horses are sweating in thier stalls. DS and I didn't get home from the barn until 10PM yesterday.

Since my front door will be open all day I guess I may as well paint it to match the shutters that are probably going up Wednesday. ( as I look feverishly around for a silver lining in all this )

We have at least 24 more hours of this. Keep sending "cheap and easily accomplished repair" thoughts folks.

            They're on their way...

And yes, I well remember that infamous humidity! Back in 1988, the summer of a record number of days in the 90s and 100s, I believe it ran something like 50 plus days, we had our house renovated....no a/c...no kitchen...no living room....just about lived in one bedroom all summer....this was my trick I used to get through that: for every trickle of sweat I felt, I imagined an ounce of my fat drizzling off of me....needless to say by September I had lost about 10 pounds.

I am wishing you a speedy answer that brings some coolness your way.

Lawren, I hope for you it is good news and that the repair will be simple. We have no idea over here how hot and humid it is back East and how important A/C is. It is nice here and the windows are open.

Are you guys ready for this?

So Randy calls me at 8:20AM and asks if he can come over right away to check out my c/a for me...

Turns on the system, hears the large rumble, turns off the system. He grabs one of the fifteen ladders I currently have on my property and climbs into the attic over the garage.

Turns the system back on and back off again. Rumages around. Turns it back on and we are back to the peaceful whisper of normalcy. Climbs out of the attic holding...wait no I'll just quote from the bill:

                Discription of Work Performed:

Remove very large mouse from blower cage. Reassemble and restore a/c.

Fan does not seem to be damaged.

                $162

                What a relief!

                  Lawren,

And here we had you buying a new a/c system! What fun is that that you only had a mouse in the attic!

                  Congratulations!

At 6AM this morning my DH was hollering my name. There was a LOT of noise coming from above the kitchen ceiling. Turned off the c/a and the noise went away. Not much I can do at that hour so I went back to sleep. I'm not sure what time the problem started...sometime between midnight and 6AM.

The c/a is totally separate from the heating system. From what I have garnered from the web it is a split system. The problem is evidently the blower &/0r the evaporater coil in the attic.

The system was installed sometime between 1984 & 1993. Should we see how much to fix it or bite the bullet and install a new system? I hear the new systems are much more efficient now but another $6K +/- is kind of hard to swallow on top of the $$$ we are spending right now.

I'll be lucky if I can get anyone here tomorrow. It's 94 degrees here today and medusa hair humidity alert is in effect.

Anyone have this issue and can make recommendations?

You are so right about if "it's not one thing it's another" I have been told my central air is on it's last legs for three years now but have just been spending about $150-200 a year in maintenance and it still works for now. Also my heating system probably needs a new burner but I spent $600 dollars two years ago repairing it and it still works. The roof over my extension family room and garage needs replacing but I can't get anyone to fix it unless I replace the entire roof which was replaced less than five years ago. My washer and dryer just went as well as my over the range microwave and I replaced them all this month and last year I replaced the oven. Now my dishwasher is leaking and i will need to replace it as well.

It just never ends when you own "this old house". My house was built in 1950.
