  • 4 Copperheads in my Backyard

While cleaning brush out of my backyard (the garbage man) found 4 copperheads and killed them all. I use the garbage man because he is so strong and needs the money and doesn't overcharge me. He took out a huge stump in my flower bed and cleaned out the back yard, killed the 4 snakes and did it all for $100!! Now don't get mad at me, he quoted me what he thought was a fair price!!

My question is this, do you think it's safe to go in the back yard? He said he got them all. My next door neighbors cat got bit by something and may lose it's leg. The vet thought it was another cat but now we think it's a copperhead as the cat was very very sick. She may still loose it's leg.

I told Kelli not to let Monkey out in the back yard. I am petrified of snakes!! I'm not scared of much, but snakes is no 1. shaggy

YIKES! I am also scared of snakes...I wouldn't spend much time in the backyard just yet...until they find a new home. Good luck.

        Copperheads!!

Copperheads like to dwell around old stumps. If you had all stumps removed you are probably o.k.
On the other hand, copperheads, unlike most snakes, are pretty aggressive.

We have copperheads, a situation intentionally elevated by our hateful neighbors. Using terminology from the Law and Order thread, when we bought our house, the acreage behind us was undeveloped. That is where Mr. and Mrs. ECPLOF now live.

Fifteen feet from our back screen porch is a 30-foot utility easement. We had maintained it until last April (2005), when ECPLOF, HOF, and Asst. OF, and their wives, moved an old trailer and yard trash there. They have not touched it since, except to put more trash there.

In addition, the power company had to cut a dead tree down a couple years ago. They cut the trunk up into pieces, but EXPLOF has not moved them.

They have 3 1/2 acres, all perfectly manicured, except for that stretch behind our house.

At some point I will call the health department because one thing our county does have is a weed ordinance. (Yeah, it's OK to harass, intimate, and assault your neighbor, but you can't have weeds!)

Jenny killed a copperhead in our back yard a couple weeks ago. Our cats play there every day.

                  .
North Carolina has the dubious distinction of the most venomous snake bites of any state in the U.S. Many of these bites could be prevented by avoiding the snake instead of trying to kill it or pick it up. Avoid Copperhead snakes! Allow it to go on its way undisturbed. Copperheads bite more people in most years than any other U.S. species, but they also have the mildest venom

I'm not a huge fan of them either. I don't mind the little garter snakes that occasionally turn up but poisonous snakes ( and we have some big rattlers that come down out of the hills when it gets to dry ) are definately on my NO WAY list. Keep Monkey in the house especially in the warm summer evenings.

If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

BTW, I'm still keeping track of how many times you annoy me.

When I was reading your post, I wasn't reading it carefully and was thinking of Copper River salmon and thought what would salmon do in your neck of the woods but you are taling about Copperhead snakes. Are they common where you are and how dangerous are they?

Melvin & Tony, you really know how to make a gal feel good!! It is comforting to know who to ship the snakes to so he can make soup!! My question is does Frank want them dead or alive? shaggy

                          Good chuckle

                          Emmy,

Your post made me chuckle. So often I find myself in the same exact situation where I am misunderstanding someone's point and can't understand at all how it fits into what they're telling me.

Yes, to both of your questions Emmy. I am taking the advice from over yonder about going on a cruise to Alaska and getting away from the snakes. My luck, a bear will chase me. shaggy
