    Alive, of Course

Anyone as touch as Frank will, of course, wish to receive them alive (more sporting, you know).

Yes, I think Frank is a little "touched".

It wasn't the best story to watch just before bedtime, but on the late news last night they reported on a house near here that strangely attracts copperheads. Last summer they caught more than 50 in the back yard and the only reason they haven't caught that many this summer is because they have sorta lost interest.

A university professor and grad student are studying and documenting it. Last summer they put microchips in their catches and this summer they are catching some of the same ones again. They weigh and measure them.

I'll stick with my study of availability in SW Florida in January.

                  water moccassin snakes in VA

                  Kat, Shaggy

I am not as brave as you are. I just moved from a lovely home on a lake in the Tidewater area -- because the snakes loved to sun themselves in my backyard.

My husband always dreamed of a home on a lake, and when we retired we purchased just such a home. He enjoyed being able to fish from our yard.

I am a city girl, and never even remotely thought about having SNAKES in my backyard. Hubby never mentioned the snake situation when discussing our move.

I tried to stay there (honestly, I tried it for five years), but after talking to folk at our local Southern States store, re: ways to prevent snakes from coming closer to (or into) our home, I knew I had to move. They suggested spreading something that would burn the stomach of the snake as he crossed over it. ( I wanted something that would PREVENT his crawling over it.) The theory being the snake would not like his stomach burned, and would not continue to cross over the area. (I just could not buy the theory, as being a solution for preventing the snake from crawling into my home). And, hiring someone to spread something, monthly, around our property/home that MIGHT prevent snakes from inching up to our home was just more than I could stand.

My husband even had to build an enclosure around our patio -- to prevent my Pug from going near the area where the snakes loved to sun themselves. Still I feared for my Pug's life, and only let him outside to relieve himself.

I grew up in St. Louis, MO, and had an aunt who lived nearby in Desoto, MO. She was bitten IN HER HOME by a snake. We were told the particular snake that bit her always traveled with its mate. So, her home was searched, and no snake was found (at that time). My aunt found the snake several weeks later, when she looked in her dresser drawer for something. I kept that vision in my mind everytime I opened a drawer in my home.
                  hope this info helps,

                  sxmdee
