I agree with you on not being hated on my trips to Europe.
"I am just personally upbeat about the fact that we can come home from a foreign trip after having experienced warmth and friendship, despite our government's disapproval in much of the world's opinion."
Very well said. I know it is true, for me, on my trips to Europe.
As far as The Korean War and Truman.
I was 10 in 1950. So the Korean War was a little before my time too. But I do know that TV did not have the influence it does now on us. However, there were still a lot of Americans at that time that wanted out of the Korean War by 1953. That is the reason Eisenhower was elected President.
"The Korean War was a stalemate that cost 44,000 American soldiers killed or missing, and ruined Truman's plans for a third term. Crusading against Truman's failures ("Korea! Communism! Corruption") Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower ended 20 years of Democratic rule in 1952.
Although he was forced out of his re-election campaign in 1952 because of low approval ratings, scholars today rank him among the best Presidents."
"In October 1950, China intervened on North Korea's behalf. MacArthur advised Truman to attack Chinese bases across the Yalu River and use atomic bombs if necessary. The Chinese pushed forces far back into South Korea, but the forces found themselves back at the original starting point in the Spring of 1951. MacArthur publicly aired his views despite the President's disagreement and against his direct orders, as Truman was concerned escalation would draw Russia and its atomic bombs into the conflict. On April 11, 1951, Truman relieved MacArthur of his command."
"The war and dismissal of MacArthur made Truman so unpopular that he did not seek a third term in the 1952 election. In February 1952, Truman's approval mark was at 22% according to Gallup polls. This is the all-time lowest approval mark for an active American President."
