I've had DirectTV for just over 2 years. The discounts in the beginning were great. The price has steadily creeped up. I got a mailing for new customers to get the same TV package that I have for only $39.95. I'm paying $70. It also includes a free Genie receiver. As a loyal customer, if I want the Genie, I have to pay $106.92.

I called and asked if I could cancel my service and join again to get the specials. I was told NO. He went on and on about how great my discounts are vs. the new people. Which they aren't. Anyhow, I think he could tell that I would be canceling soon. To save me $ on my monthly bill, we removed Cinemax and the ability to share DVR recordings on the other TV. Removing those will save me $16./month, which is still enormously higher than the specials.

I may go back to Cox. I sort of hated Cox, but I know I'll get all the new subscriber specials and I'll cut my bill in half at least. How annoying. I can't believe that these dumb companies don't want long term customers.

As soon as you tell them you're actually cancelling they'll redirect you to another department and make you an offer you can't refuse. Try it.

Agreed. I did this and got a 12 month credit of 10 or 20 dollars each month.

I had them for years...as in I had a large satellite first and when Direct first came out-I switched. I finally cut the cord and have FIOS, which is phone, Internet and TV with 2 DVR's all for less than I was paying Direct. If you do cancel-they will bomb you GREAT offers including paying any early termination fee you have with another company. Amazing. Loyalty is nothing to them until you quit them.

THey did offer me a reduction of $10./month for 24 months, but if I canceled during the 24 months, I'd owe $20. for each month that I would have had left on my contract.

I looked at Cox and it isn't worth it to switch. I could save about $20,/month, but I didn't care for them before and I remember loving Directv when I switched. I'll look at FIOS and whatever else I can find.

Even if they offer me a great deal when I cancel, I don't like to business with companies that do stuff like that.

Switch to DISH at their intro deal. But, do it with DISH, not a third party contractor. That way you will not have a contract or early cancellation penalty.

Then, a long, long time from now, switch to Direct. Maybe they will have forgotten you.

Our DISH is much more expensive as a longtime customer than it would be to start now.

Same with comcast or centurytel or any of them.

          it is what it is

That is exactly why we left DIRECTV ~ they would do nothing for long term customers (except for the occasional free movie) ~ but would bend over backwards and give the world to new customers, not to mention that the slightest storm, you lost service. (usually about 3/4 of the way through a movie you were watching!) We switched to FIOS and its been great. NOW we're bombarded with offers from them saying they miss us ~

I called about getting the GENIE a month ago & it was $299. Called last week and they ended up cutting my bill from $119 / month to $79, got the whole house DVR option, upgraded my original DVR to the Genie for free - and let me keep the original (so now I have the ability to record 7 different channels at once). The only charge was a $21 fee for tax! Genie also gives PIP to the TV it is located with and a 1TB storage. The linking of the two DVR works flawlessly. DirectTV is the best service now unless you can get FIOS. I would never go back to cable. We were paying $139 / month for cable, getting far fewer channels, far less HD and the picture quality was crap - especially with the digital service. (Time Warner is terrible).

I always want one of the top level packages as having channels I can't see drives me nuts! So I am on the next to the top package they offer (I do skip all the sports premiums except NFL Sunday Ticket & most of the Premium Movies. They threw in 3 months free of Showtime & Encore).

We had Time Warner Cable for ages, not happy with service. I called and said I was thinking about switching to FiOS and they offered me $5 per month off my phone bill. I turned that down, went off and signed up with FiOS.

Two weeks after making the switch, Time Warner starts bombarding me with fantastic offers--free phone for a year. Triple play for $90 a month including DVR. Upgraded internet.

So aggravating, but it was too late, because the FiOS guy had come and done the installation and it was done, and we're committed for two years at a GREAT price. After that, we might be going back to cable.

FIOS and ATT aren't available in my area. My son put us on a contact list for Google, if it ever comes to our area.

I priced out bundling with Cox again and there are just too many extra charges in the their fine print. I looked at Dish online and need to have my husband look at it to make sure it would have all the channels that he wants. Then, I'll need to read all the fine print.

                        It's not just tv/phone/etc.

We got our health insurance rate increase notice and it is going from $487 to $559 a month. I checked online and the same company offers plans as low as $305.

I called and we cannot get any of those plans . . . just new customers.

They are sending an application so that underwriting can evaluate our history and reduce our monthly premium, maybe.

DirecTV made me buy all of my equipment, and less than six months after I bought a HD receiver (which was supposed to be new, but they sent me a refurb unit) they told me it wasn't compatible with their new HD satellite. When the guy they sent out to get my stuff straightened out said I'd need a THIRD dish on my roof I blew and changed to Comcast. Fast forward a few years ... Comcast was just too pricy so I cancelled that and now I have a roku, Amazon Prime, Netflix streaming and Hulu Plus. I miss a couple of things, but am very happy and saving quite a bit of $.

We switch every 2 years. Dish and Direct won't upgrade until your gone. However the last time I switched to Dish, Direct kept sending emails wanting me back and offering to pay the cancellation fee.
