I understand BigFrank had a lot of weight to lose so the crash diet might well have worked there. If you have only a comparatively small amount of weight to lose you will be better advised simply to cut out the rubbish and add more exercise. Just doing that should enable you to lose 2 or 3 pounds per week.
Keith, the diet industry is big business in this country. You said the same thing but I missed your post because I got interrupted while I was trying to post my message too. I wished people would believe us but most people don't and believe the diet commercials.

We will be at Celebrity Brigantine Beach. I hear the units are just OK and that is fine by me because it is BEACHFRONT! Beachfront always trumps "glitz" in my book.

There is wi-fi so I'll be in touch and also post some resort/unit photos.

      Lawren,

I like Brigantine Beach very much.....you're gonna have a great time, enjoy!

I'm glad that they have wi-fi, and that you will be in-touch.....

        Emmy & Keith,

Of course what you say makes sense. I think it is a combination of things...learning to eat correctly, having some will-power, and not over-indulging.

However, I think I may need a guide, or an actual diet to follow. It doesn't need to be extreme, just something to give me a better idea of how to go about dieting correctly.

Interestingly enough, I just told the guy in my fish store about our diet plans, and he said he lost 10 lbs just by exercising. So, I think to be successful, you need to do a little bit of everything suggested.

Angela, walking really helps a lot and stop eating at the fast food restaurants. However, they are changing for the better because of the sue happy society. They are getting the message.

The difficulty these days is in finding a diet that isn't extreme. My niece was grossly overweight at about 5'6" and about 19 stone (260lb). She started going to WeightWatchers and despite her weight was losing very little weight, no more than a pound a week - and it was expensive. She packed in WW and started on her own regime. She walks home from work - about 2 1/2 miles; doesn't eat after 6:30pm; is laying of the alcohol (she doesn't drink excessively, but alcohol is high in calories) and has cut out the snacks between meals. In the past month and a half she has lost nearly 30lb.

I just got back from an afternoon of 'exploring' with the boys and laughed out loud at Lawren's post.

              Angela,

All kidding aside, if I were looking for a diet to help my husband lose a few (he is the same species of whale as your husband), it would have to be a diet with each meal planned because 'general principles' just don't work when it comes to whether or not to eat that extra slice of key lime pie...

As antiquated as it is, I like the Scarsdale diet because it is two weeks of planned three meals a day. It predates Atkins (by several decades), but is basically low fat/low carbs. What's nice about it is that once the two weeks are over, you have developed the taste/habit for a healthier way of eating even after you have no restrictions. There are also varieties of the diet for vegetarians, 'gourmet' (think 70s gourmet), budget, international, etc.. and you can mix and match meals from each..... And that added retro flair is fun, and as you know, very 'in' these days

Avery and Angela, from the picture I saw of you and the group was that both of you look nice and slim and I would even say, very slim. Your DHs may be another story because I don't remember them if they were in the picture. I believe they were but I didn't pay attention to them.

Amazing this thread started today.....earlier before I saw this I had already resolved to start a healthier eating and more exercise plan today. The decision is made.

I used WW before on-line so it was inexpensive and you could eat what you wanted but if you wanted to eat more than you had to make healthy selections. The junk has much higher point levels. It was a good program.

I will try it on my own since I learned much about the program already...but it does come down to healthier eating, smaller portions, less junk, and much more exercise.....and that is healthy anyway.

Stay away from the extreme diets in my opinion.

                  Good luck all.

Another good way to lose weight and keep it off. Take Apple Cider Vinegar tablets. It digests the food faster. You could take this in Liquid form to but I prefer the tablets. Also if you get Acid reflux this will help end it.

We gain weight because of our diet and life style. In order to lose weight and keep it off, you need to change your life style and learn when to put the fork down. People spend billions in this country every year and the only thing that gets slimmer is the budgets. Walk more, eat less or better. When you go to the store, park far from the store- in addition to getting in more of a walk, your car will be less likely to get bumped. Nowadays we have machines do most of the work for us, so we don't get the exercise we once did.

                          Avery,

I picked up the "South Beach Diet" book today, but haven't read it yet. I will also pick up the "Scarsdale Diet" book and compare the two. As I said, I have never really attempted a formal diet before, so I need all the help that I can get. And Avery, you're right about the planned meals. Without them, I think I will be lost, at least until I get the hang of dieting.

                          Frank & Tony,

I like the idea of the apple cider vinegar. I think it is good for you, so helping you to lose weight would be a huge plus, to an already healthy item. I have some already, I will give it a try....

                          PS:

Avery...how is your vacation going? I have never been to Smugglers...Are you and the kids having a nice time?

So far so good. Aside from the lack of a/c in the living/dining/kitchen area, our unit is great. Big, new, clean. The boys are having a blast exploring the different pool areas and today we went on a nice hike in the afternoon. It is very pretty up here. The resort is BIG and spread out, but the on-demand shuttle service makes it workable. It seems to be extremely family/child oriented, I'm not sure I'd venture up here without kids, but for them it's terrific. I would like to come back in the winter, maybe so the boys could ski here and/or at Stowe (looks like if we could manage the extra two hours it would be a nice alternative to Killington once in a while). We haven't explored Stowe yet; if I can muster the courage to drive back through 'the pass' we will do that one day since it looks like there's lots to do there. I will try to post some pics at some point. So far I took some of the unit, then the camera battery died. But this time I brought the charger

                              Angela,

Forget about all those diets. That South Beach thing is passe now.

You should go on the diet I was on for lunch today. I went to a drive up A&W and I had:

                              1) Original Bacon Cheeseburger.

                              2) Chili Cheese fries

                              3) Rootbeer Float.

That should put you onto America's diet.
