I know there are some anti-gym people, but I want to put some info out there for ya - strength-training.

Yeah, yeah, I know, but here is a fact: lean muscle burns more calories to maintain than does fat. If you just lift weights twice a week, not only have you increased your strength but sitting on the couch will now burn more calories than had you NOT lifted weights.

I've been lifting 3 times a week since October and have noticed a big difference in how I look and feel. The scale, well, it has moved some, but my clothes got bigger and that's the result I'm really looking for.

I change my workout every 4 - 6 weeks and I've swung back to doing more cardio and doing different strength exercises (a class that includes light weights plus a different set of machines than I used the past month+). I'm adding more swimming, and longer sessions on the elliptical, going for an hour a day of increased heart rate.

If you are able to implement some strength training and cardio along with sensible eating, you've got the recipe for success. I have another 20 pounds to go until I'm where I want to be - goal is to dump 10 of them in July. Meanwhile, Pilates has been helping me look better with my extra weight. SO EASY TO DO AT HOME, tho it's recommended you start with a class so you understand the basic tenets.

Whatever your plan, please ease into it. There is nothing but grief to be gained by playing Weekend Warrior.

While I am definitely 'anti-gym,' Pilates is the one thing I've come across that I really liked (not the machines, just the mat work). It certainly made me feel good. I'm guessing I've only got another year or two of 'thinking about it' before I get back to into it....

          Board Girl,

I know that your are right about excersising....my husband began a workout program this morning. I on the other hand have not yet found a program that I can easily do at home. I am going to look into it though.

I picked up two more diet books today..."Atkins" and the "The Sugar Busters" along with organic apple cider vinegar. Hopefully, something will work. I wasn't able to find "The Scarsdale Diet Book" in town, but I will pick up a copy.

So far, from what I have read, they are all very similar. It's all about the Glycemic Index, and carbs.

Weight lifting builds muscles and will add inches in some places. You might also note little difference at the scales as musle is heavier than fat. For the gals light weights are better and of course if you want to build muscle-don't go low carb. Zeppoles, wasn't he one of the Marx brothers ? The fat one?

BoardGirl, what is "Pilates"? Are they weights? How heavey are your weights? Our Chiropractor recommends walking with some weights and swing your arms with them. It is good for bone loss too, he says. Do you have a link?

              TIA.

He's gonna be so happy when I tell him that Ben & Jerry's has named a flavor after him.

Actually, he is very good natured...that's what I love most about him....

This dieting thing is harder than I thought it would be....I'm starving. I just had my late night snack....2 pieces of celery, and a glass of ice water with apple cider vinegar....

Oh Angela, the more you think about being hungry the harder it gets. Just go and get yourself something otherwise you won't be able to sleep. How about some fresh nuts or a few grapes? Of course, a small piece of dark chocolate will do the trick too.

                          Emmy,

I do want to lose a few pounds in a hurry, so I will try to stick to this for a while. Also, it is easier for my husband if we diet together....Misery loves company.

I'm not saying that I won't cheat a little, when he is not looking....
