The name inviting me is very similar to a person here.

Wasn't me. I'm new to FB and just learning the lay of the land.
That explains why the invitation did not come from jackio.
I'm wondering why someone would bother to send me an email inviting me to be on FB, or the others I get, when they could just say whatever it is they want to say in the email?
Is it about keeping score, having more friends than yours friends have friends?

That's like asking why someone would call you on the phone when they could send you a telegram.
Or send you and email when they could call you on the phone.
You get the point. FB provides an easy way of indirect communication; much less "in your face" as one-on-one communication. FB allows the general masses to communicate using a different medium that, until FB arrived, wasn't nearly as accessible to the general public. I think of it like a newspaper model: publish information and subscribers can choose to read it or not.
That is a significantly different model of communication vs. email. IMO, one won't replace the other, it just depends on which type of communication you prefer.

E-mail is for needed info; Facebook is for hanging out.
That said, I do think some people get competitive about "collecting" friends, while others collect friends they talk at but don't read. I'm the opposite; I actually read my feed so don't want too many people posting to it.

Today's invite was from Howie Mandel. It was entitled "Howie Mandel," which is why I concluded it was from Howie Mandel.
Well, that and the fact that it invited me to be a contestant on Deal or No Deal.
Is that still on?
Boy, I bet I would be great on it. So much for the witness protection program. I'm tired of being John Smith any way.
