If you have it, what parts do you have, and why, or why not what you don't have?
Whew! That sounds simpler.

Good for you, John. You are fortunate to have such a varied choice of affordable Medicare plans to choose from and to enjoy the entitlement you deserve after years of contribution to the Medicare system. I apologize for my snarky remark about it being welfare. I don't believe it is nor is Social Security. I am thankful those programs were put in place all those years ago. Like you, I paid contributions to those insurance programs and saw my elders collect the benefits. We voters tweeked those programs over the years to keep them functioning and to ensure their survival. Now it's my turn and I find the youngsters like Paul Ryan want to give me a coupon instead so they don't have to participate like the rest of us taxpayers have done for decades. I think your experience shows that the system works great and can continue to serve the retirees in the future if the selfish me-first generation will do their part instead of trying to cop out.

Any have just A, or just A & B? Why? Or why not the others?

Everybody that qualifies for Medicare has Part A which is free and covers hospitalization and related costs. Part B is optional and currently costs $104 per month. It does increase substantially for higher income people but for the vast majority it is $104. It covers doctors, etc. There are deductibles and other out of pocket expenses which is why some people buy supplemental insurance, typically called medigap or choose to go with a Medicare Advantage plan. Why people have different coverages and plans has many different answers. Sometimes many people just aren't aware of what their options are. A lot depends on what is available where you live and then there is just personal choice.
The important thing is to get as much knowledge as possible on what your options are. This is best done by going on the various Medicare web sites and even talking to the Medicare folks. A public forum like this is not a good way to learn because you have to sort fact from fiction. As you have seen, what is true in one location may be much different in another.

Speaking of Part B, this is from the government website: "Most people pay the Part B premium of $104.90 each month in 2013."
So, is Part B something where you have to select a provider, or do you just opt to have it, and the premium is deducted from your monthly SS entitlement?
- - - - - -
Now that I read further, I see that those already receiving SS will atomatically be signed up for Part A and B, and will have both if they do nothing. You have to opt out (drop) Part B if you don't want it.
So, by that, I take it to mean that if I want A and B, then I should do nothing.
Is that correct?
Reading more . . . Yes.
"If you were automatically enrolled in both Part A and Part B and sent a Medicare card, follow the instructions that come with the card, and send the card back. If you keep the card, you keep Part B and will pay Part B premiums."
So . . . guess I'm done.

What I'm amazed about is how it easy it was to answer my question, but took two threads here to get it done, which got done when I read what I already had to begin with.
So, what it boils down to is that instead of paying a private insurance company money for something I hope I never have to use, I'll just let the government not give me some money that I would be getting if I didn't automatically have to take something I hope I'll never have to use.
