  • My wife finally joined Facebook

I have not seen her in two days. I think she is stuck to her chair. I know she has to eat some times.

Well, for her the friend-accumulation contest is on.

Sometimes my wife will look up from her facebook or Candy Crush or Words With Friends, and say, "Why do you waste your time on that stupid forum?"

Don't get too excited unless you are a cigar aficionado.

It's insane what a timesink Facebook can be. I'm too obsessive to be safe there or something.

Or, too safe to be obsessive there.

Obsessive as in, someone posts a link to the latest by the Piano Guys, and I spend the next twenty minutes watching Piano Guy videos (and another couple of minutes complaining about the fact that some of the best cellist videos out there are hidden behind the name "Piano Guys").

Obsessive as in, someone posts a link to an article that has a fair discussion going on, and no only do I "have to" read the article before reading the discussion -- I usually read the discussion under the article before I read the discussion under my friend's link.

Obsessive as in, someone "shares" something that sounds iffy, or that vaguely reminds me of something I read about somewhere, and I spend twenty minutes trying to pin that down. I'd be that "annoying friend who always replies with Snopes links," except hubby generally beats me to it.

I continue to avoid Facebook. I'm with Betty White: what an enormous waste of time.

I'm in touch with those I want to be in touch with and not keen on being found by people I would have in my life if I wanted them there.

It's not for me in many ways, as I am not a picture taker and not all that interested in pics others post. I don't need people to like me cyberly and don't want anyone expecting me to always be available to read their posts or like their stuff.

My career involves the computer, last damned thing I need is another computer-centric timesuck. Same reason I don't care if a resort has free wifi, I'm not going to be on my computer on vacation, I prefer to vacation FROM the computer.

For those enamoured of it, I get it, great for you, I just don't need it in my life.

So, you say Betty White is with you? How's she doing?

It can be great when your family and friends are spread all over the country. My parents and siblings are all the other side of the Mississippi, so it's handy to be able to ship them all pictures and things in one shot (I don't post pics but hubby does). Hubby also posts the plays the kids do so everyone can see them (although I highly doubt my siblings make use of that -- mom probably does). When a good friend of mine was in Africa she posted pretty regularly; we could hold conversations without having to work out reasonable hours.

I don't have my high school or college listed because I'm really not interested in reconnecting with anyone from that era (the friends I've hung onto, I've hung onto), which so far has kept people from finding me. Knock on wood

It does take a lot of my reading time, but I'm pretty sure Betty White wouldn't have approved of a lot of what I used to read, either.

I have had family all over the country well before Facebook and we managed fine, that's all I'm saying.

you might be surprised at what Betty would approve of!!

We're slackers. Without Facebook, I only hear what my cousins are up to second hand. And I hear from my sister about six times as much with Facebook. My brother, OTOH, will actually call me out of the blue -- and he's hardly ever on Facebook. He's the only one in my generation who seems to have inherited the "keep in touch" gene. I think my sister and I developed "out of sight, out of mind" as a survival skill -- she switched schools nearly every year from first to sixth grade.
