I have a Honda self-propelled 22" mulching mower I like. I do wish I went up one level to the variable speed.

What ever you purchase buy quality and self-propelled at less 6.5 HP. I have a TORO mulching mower.
I use the mower to lose 20 pounds since April 2006.

I finally threw out my 20 year old Toro and bought a new Toro in May. Junk in comparison to the old one, despite the idiot features. Too many nooks and crannies to have grass stick to and rot the thin metal. I suggest looking for a smooth undercarriage. One other that I glanced at subsequently was John Deere at Walmart- but I didn't check it that carefully. I like the variable speed, but the other idiot features-no choke, no throttle seem to be the standard now. I also don't care for the Tecumsah engine which always sounds on the verge of sucking a valve.

Tonyg you are correct my older Toro was better built and heavier.

I have a John Deere tractor that is still running after 15 years. The newer Deere's are not the same quailty.

I have a fixed week push mower that has very low maintenance Fees. The one drawback is it doesn’t trade too well through RCI.
            Sorry I couldn’t resist.

I bought a craftman lawnmower 4.5 for about $200 and it has been very reliable. I had a bad experience with a Murray from Walmart. I brought it home filled up the oil and it ran for all of 25 minutes and quit in a puff of smoke. May have been the one lemon in the batch.

I have a Lawnboy (6 hp) which = Toro = Ok, nothing special. No throttle or choke. Already had to take it into shop because it wouldn't start, no way to choke or adjust throttle to see what was wrong.

A buddy of mine has a new Craftsman and it is defintely underpowered for a mulching mower.
