This account of the plight of the civilians caught in the war zone in eastern Ukraine is heartbreaking:

I have a local employee, who has relatives by marriage in Ukraine, some of them in the war zone, and while the stories she repeats from them are very troubling, at least they live in the cities where things are not quite as bad as the account above.

Accounts like this make one appreciate being warm and well fed at Xmas.
