  • Classaction Settlement

    I made you look, didn't I?!

This is probably not the classaction you were thinking about. We got our share of the settlement with MasterCard and VISA, for overcharging debit card transactions.

    We got $76.

Cool....not a bad amount.....I figured people get pennies for most of those but that one was worth it. Did you have to sign up for it?

I signed up for the Microsoft one long ago and they never sent me or gave me anything......too busy to look into it.....usually just not worth the time.

We didn't sign up for anything. We were MasterCard/VISA bankcard merchants so I guess all of them got contacted. Can you imagaine what that entailed?

This is the suit that brought about the question we are now all familiar with, "Debit or credit?"

Debit cards have a lower discount rate, but when they first started the bankcard companies did not offer a way for merchants to specify what type of card each customer was using. In our case our terminals did not differentiate, so we got charged the higher discount rate from debit card users.

Obviously the $76 is just a negotiated figure.

For those of you who know me, you know I still have the merchant copies of all of our bankcard sales and I suppose there is some way to go through all of them and find out if they were debit or credit, and figure out exactly how much we overpaid.

The original notice came a long time ago. It is probably at the bottom of some pile around here. We didn't have to do anything, but we had the option to opt out of the class.

If you add up that $76, the $92 from one day of jury duty, and the $9 rebate from the rural electric cooperative for the year 1990 or so, I almost have enough to get that rangefinder I've always wanted.

After applying twice for the MS CA settlement I finally got my check in the mail today - $93.

Now I can buy some drinks in the G & A Cafe
