  • Recent er visit

I have been lucky enough to not have to visit the er for many years because of injury or sickness. This last weekend after cutting down a large Doug Fir I wound up my winch on my my jeep and got my finger caught in the cable. It was very bloody. I went into the cabin and grabbed a sack of ice and had my wife drive me to the er.

I get to the er and because I am a patient of a doctor associated with the hospital group, Im on file so I do not have to fill out any information. Nice !! They got me in fairly quick as my grand daughter was working that day. I told her I would prefer to wait my turn but she said very loudly so everyone in the waiting room could hear that my finger was about cut off. The sack of ice was very much filled with blood and melted ice. It looked very bad but wasn't, imo.

Anyway, a person, not the nurse, came into my room and asked me a bunch of odd questions like are you depressed, are you thinking about suicide, are you on anti depressants, are you sad and things like this. I about started laughing when asked if I was sad but remained calm and said no. I did ask why they were asking and didn't really get a good answer.

So what is the dealio with these questions ? Anyone know ?

I am a nurse, and in our training we are taught to investigate self inflicted injuries to rule out risk of suicidal thoughts. It is probably hospital policy.

Thanks. I never thought of this as a self inflicted injury but maybe it is. I told them that my glove got stuck in the cable and it was an accident. It was a frayed winch cable that grabbed my glove while the winch was pulling the last of the cable in. Im lucky that I was on the control as I was able to stop and reverse the winch. If the winch would have pulled any farther I would have severed my finger off in the spool.

It was kind of funny that I sent her home to get her truck as we couldn't lock the jeep up with the top off. She didn't want to go but my Stihl was in the back of the jeep. She managed to call the kids who immediately made it to the er to give me an earful. They thought I had actually lost a limb but all I needed was 10 stitches. I think there was about 15 relatives who showed up to see me while waiting to get stitches and afterwards some of my friends and other relatives started calling. My grand daughter was working er but claims she told no one. So it was my wife who told everyone starting with my grand daughter. I had to explain what happened all day into the 4th.

I think she made her point !!!

I have no idea. I have been in the ER 4 times in the last 2 years and was never asked those questions. They just took very good care of me and then admitted me to the hospital.

Jackio posted that they ask these questions to people with self inflicted injuries. Its not like I tried to get my finger cut off in the winch but it was still self inflicted when you think about it.

                          So what happened John ?

I don't have a room, Im married. When I built this house I did build a man cave that became on day 1 what ever my wife wanted. I think the official name is the exercise / storage room.

First time in 2014 for a 5" deep abcess that was infected. They had to operate to drain it and then it took 11 months to heal. I was in the hospital for 5 days then 22 days in a Skilled Nursing facility and then daily home care by a nurse for 10 months.

In 2015 I was in the hospital 3 times for a Saddle Pulmonary Embolism and other blood clots in my lungs. I am OK now but still take blood thinners (Warfarin ). I have to lose 20 pounds and then I will be having hip replacement surgery.
